History of this Temple

The Trimbakeshwar Shiva Temple was built of basalt by Peshwa Nanasaheb. It is believed that the Peshwa had made a condition that whether the stone in the Jyotirlinga was hollow from inside or not. The stone proved to be hollow and on losing the bet, the Peshwa built a wonderful temple there.

Once there was a famine in Trimbakeshwar which lasted for twenty four years. Due to this people started dying of hunger. However, Varuna, the god of rain, was pleased with sage Gautama and therefore used to make it rain daily only in his ashram at Trimbakeshwar.

Due to famine, the sages took shelter in his ashram. With the blessings of the sages, Gautama’s eminence started increasing while Lord Indra’s fame started decreasing. As a result, Indra brought rain to the entire village, ending the famine. Then, the sage requested Lord Shiva to reside there. Accepting their request the Lord turned into a linga to stay there.
