Gavi Gangadhareshwara Temple – Guide

The Gavi Gangadhareshwara Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is located in Bengaluru. This temple is known for a wonderful event that happens only once in a year on the occasion of Makar Sankranti which is the mysterious miracle. On the occasion of Makar Sankranti here sees such a wonderful scene every year.

History of this Temple

The Gavi Gangadhareshwara Temple is the temple where Gautam Rishi did penance for several years to impress lord Shiva. It is believed that the Shivling in the cave of this temple is self-made, no one has made it, this Shivling has appeared on its own by taking shape in the mountains. The modern history of this temple dates back to the 9th and 16th centuries. The cave itself has a Swayambhu Shivalinga, where Kempe Gowda built the temple in the 9th century, while in the 16th century, the temple was renovated by Kempe Gowda I, who was the founder of Bengaluru, and made it grand temple.

Best time to visit Gavi Gangadhareshwara Temple

On the special day of makar Sankranti the God Sun himself showers the Shivling with his rays. The Sun descends on the day of Makarskranti. Due to which the Shivling located in the cave where the sun rays do not reach throughout the year, on this special day only for 5 to 8 minutes the sun rays reach the sanctum sanctorum and showers the Shivling with its golden redness.

The main festival celebrated in this temple is Makar Sankranti in the month of January every year.

Gavi Gangadhareshwara Temple opens from 6:00 AM to 12:30 Noon in the morning and from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM in the evening. Morning aarti is performed at 8:00 AM in the morning and evening aarti is performed at 7:00 PM in the evening.
