The Balkans have been home to many ethnic and cultural groups, each with its own unique history and traditions. Among them, the Serbs stand out as a people with a deep desire for unification. For centuries, they have sought to unite their lands, which are scattered across the Balkans, into a single state.

The idea of Serbian unification is not a new one. It dates back to the Middle Ages, when the Serbian Empire was at its height, stretching from the Adriatic to the Black Sea. Even after the empire’s decline, the idea of Serbian unity persisted, with various leaders and movements advocating for it over the centuries.

Today, the dream of Serbian unification remains alive, with many Serbs still believing that their people should be united under one flag. But, as of now, their situation is pretty isolated. Serbs are deliberately being ignored and isolated by the governments of four pro-EU nations, Albania, North Macedonia, Kosovo, and Montenegro.

A Balkan Quad was formed to harmonize with the ethos of the EU and her Western kin. However, the Serbs dwelling in Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina were left bereft. But, the leaders of these same Serb lands have proclaimed a striking and curious decree, leaving the Western world puzzled. A united Serbia is set to emerge.

The Serbian Unification

According to a media report by Euractiv, during a commemoration of a World War II concentration camp in Bosnia, Milorad Dodik, the president of the Serbian Tripartate in Bosnia-Herzegovina, called for the merger of the Serb half of Bosnia with Serbia, further escalating his separatist and anti-Western rhetoric.

Dodik emphasized that Republika Srpska cannot survive in Bosnia-Herzegovina, as it threatens their freedoms and stifles their growth. He stated that they must take ownership of the idea to proclaim Republika Srpska as a country and unite with Serbia.

Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić, who was also present at the event, made no mention of Dodik’s speech but eventually ended up extending his support for the cause. Vučić called for Serbs to unite and not be divided into Bosnian or Croatian Serbs.

The Bosniak and Croat members of Bosnia’s tripartite presidency reacted with anger, warning that Dodik’s comments should not be ignored by the international community. They criticized Dodik for openly identifying his goal of seceding from Bosnia-Herzegovina and reunifying with Serbia.

The Serbia-West Relationship

Now, this is no hidden fact: Serbs have never had a merry relationship with the Western world. Since the Balkan Wars of the 1990s, Serbia and the Western nations have had a protracted and complicated relationship. NATO was the very same alliance that ravaged Yugoslavia.

The rift deepened in 2008 when the EU recognized Kosovo’s independence, a move that Serbia vehemently opposed, as it views Kosovo as an inextricable part of its own territory. This is one major reason why Serbia is reluctant to join NATO.

In addition, the President of Serbia, Alexander Vucic has been known for being a strong opponent of Western sentiments in the Balkans. While Milorad Dodik is legitimately sanctioned by the US for his separatist calls.

Though the West may harbor disharmony towards these leaders, the truth remains that the Serbian populace adores them for their unyielding anti-Western rhetoric.

The formation of the Balkan Quad was intended to distance the Balkans from Serbia and move the region closer to the West. However, the plan died on the vine. The NATO’s and EU’s approach has inadvertently resulted in the creation of a United Serbia. Dodik and Vucic are now stronger than ever.
