Alright folks, it’s time to talk about periods. You know, that monthly visitor that women have been dealing with since the dawn of time? Well, hold on to your hats, because Canada is about to take period equality to a whole new level. And by whole new level, I mean tampons for males. Yes, you heard that right. Tampons. For. Males.
Canada’s District of Saanich has made the unorthodox choice to promote inclusivity in the most unexpected way. They’re going to offer free menstrual products in all public washrooms, including men’s rooms. Talk about levelling the playing field! Who knew that one day, guys would find themselves reaching for a tampon dispenser?
The plan will aid “people who menstruate” and those who cannot afford such things, according to council members who backed it. Menstrual product dispensers will be placed in the district’s 281 public restrooms, including women’s, men’s, and facilities that are gender-neutral. The move follows an earlier decision to make the products available at Saanich Municipal Hall.
“Period poverty is something that is a serious issue that we don’t talk about enough,” claimed Coun. Teale Phelps Bondaroff, who is also the chair of Access B.C.
“My hope is that we inspire other districts and other actors to do the same thing.”
However, not everyone is supportive of the initiative, especially the inclusion of menstrual products in men’s bathrooms.

Tampons for men?
Now, you might be wondering, “How in the world is this even technically possible?” and scratching your head. Where exactly are boys expected to wear these tampons, after all? Are there hidden treasures that we are unaware of? Will wearing tampon belts be a sudden fashion trend for men? The logistics are, to put it mildly, overwhelming.
A tweet by Coun. Colin Plant about the vote caused a flurry of social media backlash. The tweet read, “I noticed the following complimentary items in the men’s restroom in
@Saanich Hall tonight. I’m proud to be part of a local government/community that acknowledges, includes, values, and respects ALL men.”
In 2019, B.C. became the first province to mandate free menstrual products in all public school bathrooms. In 2022, the federal government announced that it was one step closer to ensuring free access to menstrual products in federally regulated workplaces.
Canada’s courageous action demonstrates the extent of liberalism that is sweeping the country. From legalising marijuana to supporting same-sex marriage, Canada has emerged as a model of progressivism. And now, they’re tearing down period barriers like never before. It’s as if they’ve set out on a mission to create the world’s one big, peaceful menstruating community.
Just picture the conversations that will take place in Saanich’s men’s restrooms. Imagine two guys discussing the specifics of period care while standing next to each other at the urinal. Guys can now truly relate to the problems of their female peers, which brings about a whole new level of companionship.
So here’s to Canada for daring to explore unexplored waters. Prepare to accept a completely new level of empathy, all you dudes out there. Because when it comes to periods, we’re all in this together. Period.
