In a geopolitical twist that caught everyone off guard, Macron’s BRICS move has set tongues wagging. Is this a breakup with NATO or a strategic dance of alliances?
French President Emmanuel Macron has shifted his gaze. From the ageing and, according to him, “pointless” NATO alliance towards the vibrant BRICS nations. The tremors of a potential breakup with NATO can be felt once again, reminiscent of General de Gaulle’s announcement in 1966. But is Macron truly dancing to a new tune?
NATO, born in the Cold War era to counter the threat of the USSR or current day Russia, has faced internal divisions and strains over the years. Geopolitical dynamics change as the world does, and certain nations have grown more and more unhappy with the alliance. France, which has historically been a member of NATO, appears to be swinging in the direction of a new beat that leads to Moscow’s doorstep.
Whispers abound that France may be considering a relationship with the BRICS bloc, an alliance of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. Macron’s desire to attend an upcoming BRICS summit has raised eyebrows, especially since France is not a member.
Macron’s BRICS Affair
On Tuesday, French newspaper L’Opinion reported, citing sources in the Elysee Palace, that Macron has asked South African President Cyril Ramaphosa for an invitation to the upcoming BRICS summit.
To this even Russian Foreign minister Maria Zakharova asked Macron to explain as to why he wants to attend the South-Africa-hosted top-level summit of BRICS.
“It would be nice if they [Macron’s office] told why they want [to attend the summit]. Do they want to once again make some contact show Paris’ activity or is it a ‘Trojan horse’
Of some sort- so let them explain,” Zakharova told Radio Sputnik.
Some sceptics see it as a Trojan horse ruse, but perhaps there’s more than meets the eye.
Recent occurrences indicate that France might be prepared to renounce Western diktats and build a new route with Russia. Consider its aggressive efforts to de-dollarize the French economy. Recently, France took a step towards de-dollarization in Europe by trading in Yuan. This suggests a shift away from Western financial hegemony.
