Poland appears to be the latest player in the line of fire. As tensions escalate in Ukraine, the US seems to have found a new sacrificial lamb in Poland. But are empty promises and false hopes from the US setting the stage for history to repeat itself?

It’s no secret that the US has a track record of pledging support to countries facing Russian aggression. First, it was Ukraine, and now Poland finds itself in a similar position. Who can forget the dramatic events when NATO rushed to Kyiv’s rescue, promising to safeguard its territory against Russian incursion? Unfortunately, Ukraine’s full-blown war against Moscow ended in disappointment, and now echoes of a similar scenario can be heard in Warsaw.

The situation unfolding on Poland’s eastern borders is nothing short of tense. With Wagner deploying troops in Belarus and Poland stationing its forces to counter any potential attack, the threat of another brewing conflict is undeniable. In the midst of it all, the US has made its familiar pledge: to defend its Eastern European ally in case of an external assault.

Washington will defend Poland in case of an attack from abroad, State Department spokesman Matthew Miller told reporters on Monday, commenting on rumors that fighters from the private military company Wagner, currently stationed in Belarus, wanted to “go on tour” in the neighboring state.

Miller said, “I would just reiterate that our alliance with Poland is strong. Poland is a NATO member, of course, and we will defend, if necessary, every inch of NATO territory.”

Yet, are these assurances just another set of empty promises? The State Department has vowed to stand by Poland’s side, but history teaches us to approach such commitments with caution. Recall how the US compelled Ukraine to take on Russia, only to later deny any direct military involvement when Kyiv faced the brunt of the conflict. The consequences for Ukraine have been devastating, with thousands of lives lost and extensive damage incurred, all while expecting US assistance that never fully materialized.

Now as the US feeds Poland’s hope for protection, it raises concerns that the country could unwittingly leap into a fireball without substantial support. With the specter of Wagner fighters lingering in Belarus and Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko voicing troubling statements about potential attacks on Polish soil, the stakes have never been higher.

While the US’s alliance with Poland remains strong, the key question is whether history will repeat itself. Will Poland find itself in a precarious position, facing Russian aggression with limited assistance from its allies? As tensions escalate, it’s crucial for Poland to tread carefully and remain vigilant in its dealings with the international community.
