Amidst the ongoing Israel-Gaza conflict, anti-Semitism has resurfaced in Western nations, notably during massive pro-Palestine rallies in Canada where disturbing anti-Semitic slogans were raised. This surge in anti-Semitic activities within Canada has not prompted the country’s leader to address the crisis at its roots.
Instead, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau advocates for online censorship as a necessary measure. At a conference addressing anti-Semitism, Justice Minister Arif Virani reiterated the federal Liberal government’s commitment to combat online harms through new legislation. However, no specific timeline was provided for this initiative.
Virani emphasized the importance of a secure digital environment, paralleling it with the need for safe streets in communities. The government’s initial attempt to tackle online hate in June 2021 with Bill C-36 faced delays and eventually expired due to the election called by Prime Minister Trudeau.
Subsequent promises to introduce new legislation within 100 days after forming a government have faced additional setbacks following consultations.
Bill C-36 is Back: To Save Jews?
The proposed legislation aimed to address online harm in five categories: hate speech, terrorist content, incitement to violence, child sexual exploitation, and non-consensual sharing of intimate images.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau expressed his concerns during a conference on fighting anti-Semitism. He acknowledged a significant increase in anti-Semitic incidents following the conflict between the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas and Israel. Trudeau emphasized the urgency of addressing this issue and announced the forthcoming introduction of Bill C-36 to suppress the escalating hate against Jews in the country.
However, one needs to point out the hypocrisy here. There is no doubt that Anti-Semitism is surging amidst the Israel-Gaza war, how can one forget that Trudeau’s government has shown leniency towards individuals with anti-Semitic views within its ranks?
For instance, a senior advisor to a Liberal cabinet minister, Brandon Montour, openly endorsed violent actions against Israel, sparking controversy. Additionally, Trudeau appointed Amira Elghabway, who has been accused of promoting attacks on Jews, as a special envoy to tackle Islamophobia, raising questions about the consistency of Trudeau’s approach.
On top of it, how many times Trudeau has publicly questioned Israel on its stance on Gaza? Isn’t this true that the Trudeau government allocated millions of dollars of aid to Palestine which was eventually used by Gazans? Now he is suddenly worried about the Jews and Anti-semitism. In reality, it’s all just a facade.

Trudeau’s motivation appears rooted in his personal experience, of facing significant online hatred. While he has already implemented laws like Bill C-11 and C-18 to tackle online hatred. He is now seizing the opportunity of Anti-Semitism once again for his personal gains. He now advocates for online censorship, using anti-Semitism as a pretext to fulfill his authoritarian aspirations and so, one must not fall for it.
