Zelensky-Zaluzhny Tensions Threaten Ukraine’s Stability

It was recently reported that the United States is expressing concern over the perceived discord between Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky and the country’s armed forces commander, Valery Zaluzhny. This reported rift is believed to be adversely affecting Kiev’s military endeavors. The Biden administration is urging Ukraine to refine its strategy for confronting Russia in 2024. However, Washington is apprehensive that the identified “differences” between Zelensky and Zaluzhny are impeding the process of formulating a new strategy. 

The U.S., a prominent supporter of Kiev, is keen on expediting the development of an enhanced plan to confront Russia. Sources suggest that understanding Kiev’s plans is crucial for the U.S. to align its support effectively in aiding Ukraine’s defense in the upcoming year.

The discord arose when the president expressed displeasure over the general characterizing the situation on the Russian front as a stalemate. Despite Zaluzhny retracting his remarks, persistent “stresses” persist, challenging official claims of unified leadership.

The disagreements extend to mobilization efforts, crucial for replenishing the Ukrainian military ranks amid substantial losses. Zelensky is reportedly delaying a bill advocated by Zaluzhny, aimed at lowering the conscription age. This divergence in perspective on mobilization strategies further exacerbates the existing discord between the two leaders.

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has issued a warning of potential dismissal to the country’s top general, Valery Zaluzhny, who reportedly declined to resign voluntarily. Sources revealed that Zelensky proposed an alternative role for Zaluzhny as the national security head. However, the general rejected this proposition, escalating the already existing tensions.

According to sources, President Zelensky purportedly informed General Zaluzhny that his removal from the current position was imminent, regardless of accepting an alternative role. Also, Zaluzhny declined an offer to assume the top position in the National Security and Defense Council.

It was reported by some media channels that Zaulzhany was about to lose his job. In response, the Defense Ministry issued a message on Telegram: “Dear journalists, we reply to all of you at once: No, it’s not true.” Zelensky’s spokesman, Sergey Nikiforov, also said that the president “didn’t fire the commander-in-chief.” Ukrainian state-run censorship body CSCIS called the rumors of Zaluzhny’s resignation “destabilizing” and “demoralizing.”

Amid widespread reports of the impending dismissal of the top general, two sources informed that although Zelensky seems to have made a decision, there might be a delay in removing Zaluzhny to avert a broader scandal.

Zaluzhny, viewed as a potential political rival to Zelensky due to his popularity among Ukrainian voters, faces an uncertain fate. A December opinion poll by the Kiev International Institute of Sociology (KIIS) indicated a drop in public trust for Zelensky to 62% from 84% within a year, while 88% of respondents expressed trust in Zaluzhny.

The reported tensions between Zelensky and Zaluzhny are rooted in disputes over potential encroachment into each other’s domains. In November, their differences intensified when Zelensky took offense to the general characterizing the Russian battlefield situation as a “stalemate.” 

The discord between these key figures in the political and military domains has the potential to disrupt the nation’s internal coherence. Hence, the ongoing tensions between President Zelensky and General Zaluzhny pose a significant threat to the stability of Ukraine.
