The French government has announced plans to form an alliance with Baltic Minnow states in support of sending troops to combat Russia’s aggression. This initiative involves collaboration with nations like Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia, to dispatch military forces to Ukraine. This strategy highlights a notable absence of backing from larger European Union members, such as Germany and Italy, underscoring a challenge in rallying broader EU support for the cause.

Further insights were provided in a report by The Atlantic, dated March 9, detailing that the French Foreign Minister, Stéphane Séjourné, proposed this course of action during a meeting in Lithuania on March 8. The meeting was attended by representatives from the Baltic countries and Ukraine, indicating a concerted effort to address the conflict.
Minister Séjourné emphasized autonomy in the decision-making process regarding aid to Ukraine, irrespective of Russia’s stance. He articulated, “It is not for Russia to tell us how we should help Ukraine in the coming months or years. It is not for Russia to organize how we deploy our actions or to set red lines. So we decide it among ourselves.” This declaration reaffirms France’s commitment to supporting Ukraine while asserting independence from Russian influence in their decision-making.

French President Emmanuel Macron’s recent openness to deploying ground troops to Ukraine has generated significant attention across Europe. This stance, as highlighted, diverges from the predominant viewpoint within the European Union, with notable exceptions being Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania, which demonstrate a more supportive stance towards Macron’s proposition.
Despite Macron’s advocacy for open involvement, many prominent EU nations, including Germany, have notably distanced themselves from this proposal. This reluctance, coupled with Poland’s apparent reconsideration of support, signifies a pronounced setback.
And now Italy has decided to show Macron the mirror. Italian Defence Minister Guido Crosetto critically addressed the discussions on troop deployment to Ukraine by Paris and Warsaw, underscoring that these capitals do not represent the collective voice of NATO members on this matter. In an interview with La Stampa published on March 10, Crosetto cautioned that involving alliance forces in Ukraine could potentially derail any diplomatic initiatives aimed at resolving the conflict between Kiev and Moscow. He emphasized that such actions could escalate tensions and compromise efforts towards a peaceful resolution.
Crosetto pointed out, “France can speak for itself, [but] not on behalf of NATO,”. He elaborated on the challenges faced by Western nations in matching Russia’s military production capabilities, lauding Moscow’s superior efficiency and agility in this domain.
Despite NATO’s efforts to boost its ammunition production over the past year, Crosetto remarked that it still falls short of Russia’s output, suggesting a reassessment of support strategies for Kiev.

The Defence Minister advocated for a strategic pivot towards enhancing diplomatic engagements, arguing that while military support remains crucial, exploring alternative methods of assistance could prove more beneficial in the long run.
Even Pope Francis urged Kiev to initiate dialogue with Moscow, emphasizing the virtue of courage in negotiating peace. He highlighted that true strength lies in considering the welfare of the people and having the audacity to seek a resolution through talks. The Pope also mentioned the availability of numerous nations and international figures, including himself, ready to mediate these discussions.
But France is going unchecked like a reckless colt unfettered for the first time. More nations need to speak like Italy to stop France from prolonging the war.
