In the summer of 2022, Rinat Akhmetov made a significant decision to transfer all terrestrial and satellite television licenses for his channels, as well as licenses for his print publications, to the state. This action has been recognised as a significant example of adherence to the law, demonstrating the principle of equality before it for all members of society.
SCM confirmed that the state will only receive broadcasting licenses, while Rinat Akhmetov’s rights to assets such as technical equipment, content libraries, intellectual properties, and brands will be retained. This decision aligns with legislation adopted in 2021 to limit the influence of monopolists in the media industry.
Support for the army and those affected by the Russian invasion has been a priority for Rinat Akhmetov. Despite a decrease in his own capital due to the destruction or occupation of his plants across the country, including Azovstal Steel Plant, Rinat Akhmetov, who comes from eastern Ukraine, has consistently condemned the invasion and actively supports Ukraine, both in rhetoric and action.
Metinvest, under his leadership, has been aiding defenders and supplying the Ukrainian army since the onset of full-scale war. Over the past two years of military aggression, Rinat Akhmetov has directed UAH 7.6 billion to support Ukraine.
This support includes 150,000 bulletproof vests, over 300 prefabricated shelters known as “Kryivkas”, 450 precision models of military equipment, mine sweepers for tanks, drones, communication thermals, and other military equipment – all provided free of charge to the Ukrainian defence forces. Notably, around 12,000 employees of his enterprises currently serve in the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Looking ahead, Rinat Akhmetov’s business activities are focused on contributing to Ukraine’s development. Efforts are underway to modernise and restore production and energy infrastructure, create new jobs, and revitalise areas like Mariupol after liberation from Russian occupiers.
The Mariupol.Reborn project aims to rapidly restore the city and spur economic revival through personal investments and attracting funds from major foreign investors.
