Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg is seemingly going full Elon Musk now. On January 7, he revealed significant updates to the company’s content moderation policies. Meta has also removed non-binary and transgender themes from its Messenger app. Zuckerberg has also announced plans to “remove fact-checkers and replace them with Community Notes, similar to those used on X.”
Many supporters see this shift as a victory for free speech, believing it will encourage a greater freedom of expression on the platform. This is quite a massive change in Zuckerberg’s approach, ahead of President elect Donald Trump’s inauguration. He is suddenly a free speech champion now. He has vowed to work with the Trump administration to go after censorship, not just in the US but also globally.
It is being speculated whether Zuckerberg has had a change of heart or is he playing smart here and being opportunistic? Well, there’s way to find that out and that is: “Facebook Files”.
Zuckerberg is seemingly concerned about transparency. If he’s really serious, it’s time for Facebook Files.
In July 2024, a federal judge ruled that the government had been working with social media platforms to censor speech protected by the First Amendment. In a detailed 155-page opinion, the judge revealed how major platforms, including Facebook, were involved in censorship practices.
For example, Facebook removed posts that “encouraged people to contact their legislature to end the government’s mask mandate.” It also censored posts discussing the decision to vaccinate in terms of “personal or civil liberties.” Many Americans believe vaccination should be a personal choice, not a government mandate enforced with threats to careers and livelihoods.
Facebook also suppressed discussions about the “lab-leak theory” of COVID-19, labeling it “misinformation.” However, this decision backfired, as the lab-leak theory is now widely considered one of the most plausible explanations for the virus’s origins.
Additionally, Facebook censored the Hunter Biden laptop story, despite the FBI refusing to confirm if any information from the laptop was fake. Even content from public figures was targeted. Facebook reportedly agreed to censor Tucker Carlson’s posts at the White House’s request, even though they didn’t violate the platform’s rules.

That’s why a major section of the public is demanding the Facebook files now, on the lines of Twitter files released by Elon Musk upon buying the social media platform. Through Twitter files, Musk showed “what really happened” behind the scenes regarding content moderation decisions at the social media company. Twitter Files consisted of thousands of documents, including many Slack discussions, between Twitter employees about their content moderation practices. These files revealed how Twitter would use tools to shadow-ban some accounts, how Trump was removed following Jan 6 Capitol protests and how Hunter Biden story was suppressed.
The public should be made aware of the back-and-forth between the government and Facebook on COVID/vaccine censorship — not just carefully selected emails. The public needs transparency and accountability from big tech. The Facebook files will expose the truth about their censorship.
No more selective leaks or handpicked communications. We want the full picture of their dealings with the government. Only then can the people really trust that Facebook is truly committed to free speech and open dialogue.
