The Indian Coast Guard Ship Sachet embarked on a mission to Sudan on Friday, carrying more than two tons of life-saving medicines, including critical anti-cancer drugs.
The Ministry of External Affairs, in an official statement, highlighted India’s commitment to humanitarian efforts, stating, “Providing humanitarian aid to the people of Sudan, the Indian Coast Guard Ship Sachet has set off today with a consignment of essential medicines, including anti-cancer drugs, to support those in need.”
Earlier today, the same vessel departed for Djibouti, transporting medical equipment, which included 20 haemodialysis machines and a reverse osmosis (RO) plant.
The ongoing conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which began in April 2023, has left millions in distress. Reports from the World Food Programme indicate that over 25 million people across Sudan, South Sudan, and Chad are experiencing worsening food insecurity, with at least 17 million affected in Sudan alone. The crisis poses a significant threat of becoming the world’s largest hunger emergency.
India has remained steadfast in its global humanitarian efforts. Last month, the country dispatched 26 tons of aid to Honduras following Tropical Storm SARA, comprising medical supplies and disaster relief materials such as surgical kits, glucometers, oximeters, gloves, syringes, IV fluids, blankets, sleeping mats, and hygiene kits.
On January 27, India extended support to the Kurdistan region of Iraq by sending a humanitarian consignment consisting of bronchodilators, inhalers, and ventilators. The aid aimed to assist those in need and reinforce India’s longstanding commitment to Iraq. In 2003, responding to the UN Secretary-General’s appeal, India pledged USD 20 million to help the Iraqi people.
India continues to uphold its vision of “Vishwabandhu Bharat,” strengthening global humanitarian ties through timely and essential assistance. It has always aimed for the welfare of the common man regardless which country they belong to, this move is another indication of this ideology the Indian state operates with.
