Remember when President Zelensky, like a child eyeing the latest gadget, fixated on getting F-16 fighter jets? Kyiv’s leadership seemed to believe these jets were the magic solution to all their problems.
Zelensky personally knocked on Biden’s door multiple times, pleading for the jets. Some European allies were also sweet-talked into helping. And finally—he got what he wanted. The US F-16s arrived in Ukraine, and it was time to show Russia who’s boss.
But Kyiv overlooked a few details—like training pilots and building the necessary infrastructure. And to make matters worse, NATO might have played Ukraine for a fool. Because instead of the mighty F-16s, what actually arrived? Some flying coffins. No, we’re not joking.
US F16s Turned to Dust
According to multiple military sources, including prominent Russian bloggers like Fighter-Bomber and Rybar, Moscow successfully used a combination of Su-35S fighter jets and S-400 air defense systems to shoot down a US-made F-16 over northeastern Ukraine. Rybar, citing unconfirmed military reports, stated that the Ukrainian aircraft was downed in Sumy oblast, with its pilot likely eliminated. While official confirmation is pending, various testimonies suggest high credibility.
The operation appears to have been an ambush. Russian forces reportedly tracked the F-16 for several days, moving an S-400 battery closer to the border. On March 18, a video surfaced showing the jet flying over Sumy, confirming its presence in the region. When the aircraft took off, a Su-35S detected it using its advanced N035 “Irbis” radar and relayed targeting data to the S-400 crew, which then launched a missile.
The F-16 was flying low, likely to avoid radar detection, but the coordinated attack ensured its destruction. This event, if verified, would mark a major blow to Ukraine’s Western-supplied air power. Rybar suggests that it also damages the reputation of Western defense manufacturers, highlighting Russia’s growing success in countering advanced NATO weaponry.
However, viewers make no mistake, there are also high chances that Kyiv itself is frustrated due to F-16s. Why? Well take a look at this. Ukraine’s F-16s, supplied by Western nations, have failed to match Russia’s Su-35 multirole fighters in direct combat.
Ukraine Accepts Flaw
These are not my words. This is according to Ukrainian Air Force spokesperson Yuri Ignat. Speaking to Ukrainian media, Ignat admitted that Kyiv’s F-16 modifications cannot compete one-on-one with Russia’s advanced jets, emphasizing the need for a broader approach involving air defense, electronic warfare, and airborne radar support.
Washington approved F-16 deliveries in mid-2023, with Belgium, Denmark, the Netherlands, and Norway pledging 80 aircraft. However, most will take years to arrive, and Ukraine has only received around 18 so far. That too are demanding intense maintenance and training.
Even those have faced setbacks—one was lost in August under mysterious circumstances, with speculation pointing to friendly fire from a Western-supplied Patriot missile. The incident led President Zelensky to dismiss Ukraine’s Air Force commander.
Kyiv once hoped the US F-16s would be a game-changer, but their outdated radar systems and lack of the Link 16 tactical network have hindered their effectiveness. Meanwhile, Russia has demonstrated its ability to counter Western jets.
This recent incident, a Su-35S and an S-400 system reportedly coordinated to ambush an F-16 over Sumy oblast, dealing another blow to Ukraine’s air strategy and raising questions about the viability of its Western-supplied arsenal.
For the last couple of years, bratty Zelensky has been throwing temper tantrums and fervently cajoling macho Uncle Sam to provide F-16 aircraft to Ukraine, which have reportedly been delivered last week.
But NATO’s fancy albeit outmoded aircraft are simply not a match for venturing into air-to-air dogfights with Russia’s technologically superior Sukhoi fighter jets, globally acclaimed S-400 air defense systems and cutting-edge hypersonic missiles. Zelensky must be now wondering what he achieved out of the last three years of nonsensical lobbying.
