In June 2025, a public feud erupted between President Donald Trump and tech billionaire Elon Musk, marking the end of their once-strong political alliance. The discord began after Musk criticized Trump’s legislative initiative, the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” leading to a series of public exchanges that have captivated national attention.
The conflict ignited when Musk, who had previously served as head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), publicly denounced the bill for its potential to increase the federal deficit by $1.5 trillion and for eliminating electric vehicle subsidies. He expressed disappointment over the bill’s passage and urged Congress to reject it. In response, Trump expressed “disappointment” in Musk, suggesting that Musk had benefited from his association with the administration.
The Trump Musk Accusations
Elon Musk: Musk denied having access to the bill during his tenure and accused lawmakers of rushing it through without proper review. He also used Trump’s past tweets criticizing deficit spending against him.
Musk has also gone on to level serious accusations against President Trump, including claims that Trump is implicated in the Jeffrey Epstein files. Musk’s social media posts suggest that Trump’s connections to Epstein are a reason why certain documents have not been released. He has also called for Trump’s impeachment and criticized the president’s policies, particularly the “Big Beautiful Bill” that Musk deems fiscally irresponsible .
Donald Trump: Trump claimed that Musk had greatly helped him in the past and suggested that Musk might be suffering from “Trump Derangement Syndrome.” He also credited Musk’s financial support for his electoral success.
In response, President Trump has threatened to revoke government contracts with Musk’s companies, including SpaceX and Tesla. He has accused Musk of going “crazy” and suggested that Musk’s criticism stems from the removal of electric vehicle subsidies in the new legislation. Trump’s administration is reportedly considering actions to limit Musk’s influence and access to federal resources.
The Fallout of the clash
The public dispute has had significant repercussions. Tesla’s stock price has dropped over 14%, erasing approximately $152 billion in market value. The rift has also caused divisions within the Republican Party, with some lawmakers expressing concern over Musk’s influence and others rallying behind him.
The feud has unsettled the White House and threatened Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency initiative. The clash revealed deep fissures driven by ego and policy disagreements, destabilizing the MAGA coalition and escalating one of the most public political-tech industry disputes in U.S. history.
The public fallout has now also attracted widespread media attention, with many viewing it as the end of a politically convenient alliance now marred by personal grievances and public insults.
Reportedly there will a phone call on Friday between the two to calm things down and find some kind of common ground. It would be best for the Republicans and MAGA if this happens. Otherwise with the way Musk and Trump are clashing it is threatening to derail the entire movement and President Trump’s reign might become far more tumultuous than even his first one.
