Deadly Shooting at Gaza Aid Site Amid Controversial Al-Aqsa Visit by Israeli Minister

The lethal crackdown on food seekers, combined with incendiary political maneuvers around Jerusalem’s most sensitive religious site, have intensified international condemnation of Israel’s conduct.

In a devastating escalation of violence in Gaza, Israeli forces killed at least 27 Palestinians seeking food aid at a distribution site operated by the US-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) on Sunday. Palestinian officials reported that in addition to these deaths, six others succumbed to starvation or malnutrition amid a deepening humanitarian crisis in the blockaded territory. Eyewitnesses described Israeli troops opening fire on desperate crowds amid the worsening famine, with accounts suggesting that the shooting was indiscriminate as people struggled to survive.

A Pattern of Violence Against Aid Seekers

This tragedy is part of a broader pattern of lethal attacks on Palestinians during aid distribution attempts. Since late May, United Nations figures estimate that at least 1,400 people have been killed while seeking humanitarian assistance in Gaza, most near GHF sites or along convoy routes under Israeli military control.

The situation is further exacerbated by a blockade that restricts the flow of vital food, medical supplies, and fuel, leaving Gaza’s population of over two million on the brink of starvation. According to health officials, starvation-related deaths have surged in recent months, with children disproportionately affected.

Controversial al-Aqsa Visit Sparks Outrage

The humanitarian toll comes amid escalating political tensions sparked by Israel’s far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir’s visit to the al-Aqsa Mosque compound, also known as Haram al-Sharif or the Temple Mount, in occupied East Jerusalem. On the same day as the deadly shooting, Ben-Gvir led prayers at the contested site—a move widely condemned as provocative for violating longstanding arrangements under which non-Muslims may visit but not pray at the compound. Jordan, the site’s custodian, denounced the visit as an “unacceptable provocation,” while Palestinian authorities and regional actors accused Israel of further undermining fragile peace efforts.

Calls for Annexation and Forced Displacement

Ben-Gvir, an ultra-nationalist figure who oversees Israel’s police forces, used his visit to call for the annexation of the Gaza Strip and the “voluntary emigration” of Palestinians, language experts warn could amount to forced displacement or war crimes. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, however, sought to downplay the incident, reiterating that Israel’s policy regarding the site remained unchanged.

Growing International Condemnation and Diplomacy

The lethal crackdown on food seekers, combined with incendiary political maneuvers around Jerusalem’s most sensitive religious site, have intensified international condemnation of Israel’s conduct. Western nations, including an emerging coalition of countries planning to recognize Palestinian statehood, have increasingly voiced outrage over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and what they describe as disproportionate Israeli military actions.

Despite diplomatic pressure and calls for a ceasefire, Israel continues to impose severe restrictions on aid, maintain its blockade, and execute military operations that humanitarian groups say amount to violations of international law, including acts of collective punishment.

Challenges Facing Humanitarian Aid Efforts

The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, tasked with distributing aid under Israeli oversight since May, faces criticism for operating distribution sites within militarized zones controlled by Israeli forces. Aid deliveries have been marred by violence, with the UN reporting nearly 860 deaths near GHF sites alone since May, and hundreds more casualties along aid routes. The constrained and often chaotic distribution process leaves vulnerable populations at extreme risk. The Palestinian Red Crescent headquarters in Khan Younis was also targeted by Israeli strikes, further hampering medical response capabilities.

Protests and Human Rights Concerns

Meanwhile, protests erupted across the occupied West Bank and Gaza in response to both the killings and Ben-Gvir’s al-Aqsa visit. Palestinians called for an end to the war in Gaza and released images bearing witness to the suffering of detainees and starving children. The occupied territories remain gripped by unrest as more than 10,800 Palestinians face detention, with reports of widespread abuse in Israeli prisons.

Amid growing international alarm, the situation raises urgent questions about the path forward. Calls intensify for sustained humanitarian access, a halt to hostilities, and respect for sacred sites critical to peace efforts. Yet, Israel’s recent conduct and political posturing suggest little immediate relief for Palestinians enduring a brutal siege and relentless violence.

Human Cost of the Ongoing Conflict

This deadly incident at a food distribution site starkly illustrates a Gaza increasingly starved and militarized under a continuing Israeli offensive that has claimed over 60,000 lives since October 2023. It underscores the profound human cost amid geopolitical stalemate, where rising global condemnation clashes with entrenched policy, leaving Gaza’s population caught between blockade, bullets, and diplomatic inertia.
