On August 18, 2025, Russian state media outlet RT released a video showing a U.S.-made M113 armored personnel carrier (APC) in action in Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia region. The vehicle, which had reportedly been captured from Ukrainian forces, was shown moving near the village of Malaya Tokmachka with both the Russian tricolor and the U.S. flag displayed.

The footage has been widely interpreted as a symbolic act of psychological messaging, appearing only days after a summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska.

The Captured Vehicle and Its Use

The M113, originally supplied to Ukraine by Western partners, has been among the vehicles transferred to Kyiv as part of ongoing military aid. According to Russian reports, the vehicle was seized in combat, repaired, and put back into service with Russian units.

In the RT video, soldiers from the 70th Motorized Rifle Regiment of Russia’s 42nd Guards Division were seen operating the APC across the Zaporizhzhia frontlines.

Many analysts have viewed the addition of the U.S. flag alongside the Russian one as a carefully staged element. The timing, coming just after the Alaska summit between Trump and Putin, suggests the move was meant to carry symbolic weight, either to reinforce narratives promoted by Moscow or to draw a reaction from both Ukraine and the West.

Ukrainian Response

Ukrainian officials criticized the display. Andriy Yermak, head of the Presidential Office, called the act “an attempt to manipulate symbols in service of aggression.” He argued that Russia was using foreign emblems to further its war, which has already caused significant civilian casualties and displacement.

Other Ukrainian commentators described the video as a deliberate provocation aimed at confusing audiences and undermining the partnership between Ukraine and its allies. Petro Andryushchenko, head of Ukraine’s Center for the Study of Occupation, suggested that the act might be linked to the Alaska talks, though he cautioned against interpreting it as a genuine gesture of goodwill from Russia.

International Reactions

The footage has drawn notice internationally as well. While the Pentagon has not issued an official statement, the incident has sparked debate about the use of foreign symbols in military propaganda. Some observers argue that the choice to display the American flag was a calculated attempt to test Western resolve and highlight Russia’s capacity to manipulate captured equipment for psychological effect.

Analysts also noted the timing in relation to upcoming diplomatic events. Following the Trump-Putin meeting in Alaska, U.S. officials are preparing for talks in Washington with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and European leaders. These discussions are expected to focus on the trajectory of the war and possible frameworks for negotiation. Against this backdrop, Russia’s use of U.S. imagery may complicate efforts to maintain cohesion among Western partners.

Former U.S. Ambassador to Russia Michael McFaul remarked that such propaganda gestures could add difficulty to ongoing diplomacy by amplifying Moscow’s preferred narratives. Russian media coverage of the Alaska summit has already emphasized Putin’s portrayal as a pragmatic negotiator, while framing Ukraine and its allies as resistant to dialogue.

Broader Implications

Observers describe the video as an example of modern propaganda techniques, combining irony and symbolism to maximize attention. Reactions on social media reflected mixed interpretations: some users dismissed the act as a mocking gesture, while others speculated that it hinted at potential openness to U.S.-Russia engagement.

Within Ukraine, the video coincided with reports of continued Russian advances in Zaporizhzhia and renewed attacks on infrastructure. These developments, paired with the symbolic use of the U.S. flag, illustrate how military operations are increasingly paired with messaging intended to influence perceptions both locally and internationally.

The release of the video underscores the importance of narrative in modern conflict. As Zelensky prepares for high-level talks in Washington, Ukraine will likely seek to reinforce Western support and clarify the outcomes of the recent Trump-Putin summit. European leaders are also expected to play a role in shaping the discussions, wary of potential concessions to Russia.

While the image of a U.S. flag flying from a captured M113 may not alter the course of the conflict on the ground, it has succeeded in drawing attention and sparking debate. For Russia, it serves as both a tactical display and a symbolic message; for Ukraine and its allies, it represents another example of the challenges posed by propaganda in a prolonged war.
