Putin calls European leaders 'Little Pigs', Vows Military Gains in Ukraine If Diplomacy Collapses

Russian President Vladimir Putin issued one of his starkest warnings yet to European powers on Tuesday, declaring that Moscow is fully prepared for a direct military confrontation if Europe chooses to escalate tensions. Speaking at the VTB “Russia Calling!” Investment Forum in Moscow, Putin said that while Russia does not seek a war with Europe, it would respond decisively if provoked.

“If Europe Starts a War, We Are Ready Immediately”

Responding to a reporter’s question referencing comments by Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto—who suggested Europe is preparing for conflict with Russia—Putin dismissed the notion that Moscow seeks escalation.

“We’re not going to have a war with Europe,” Putin said. “But if Europe suddenly wants to wage a war with us and starts it, we are ready right away. There can be no doubt about that.”

He warned that any direct conflict would result in devastating consequences for European nations.

“It would end so swiftly that there would be no one left to negotiate with in Europe,” he said, using the Russian word for “war” to emphasize seriousness.

Accusations Against Europe: ‘They Are on the Side of War’

Putin accused European governments of undermining U.S. President Donald Trump’s efforts to end the nearly four-year conflict in Ukraine. He claimed Europe has been proposing peace terms they knew Moscow would reject, as a tactic to frame Russia as unwilling to negotiate.

“They put forward proposals absolutely unacceptable to us, only to say Russia is against peace. That’s their goal,” Putin argued.

According to Putin, European countries have “locked themselves out” of meaningful negotiations by cutting off diplomatic channels with Moscow.

“They are on the side of war,” Putin said.

Threat to Cut Ukraine Off from the Sea

Turning to Ukraine, Putin issued another severe warning: Russia may move to sever Ukraine’s access to the Black Sea altogether in response to drone attacks on tankers belonging to Moscow’s “shadow fleet.”

“The most radical solution is to cut Ukraine off from the sea—then piracy will be impossible in principle,” Putin said.

He added that Russia would escalate strikes on Ukrainian naval assets, port infrastructure, and vessels supplying Kyiv.

Ukrainian Drone Strikes Escalate Maritime Tensions

Ukraine has increasingly targeted Russian oil infrastructure and tankers operating under opaque ownership structures designed to bypass Western sanctions. Over the weekend, Kyiv claimed to have hit two sanctioned tankers in the Black Sea heading to load Russian oil for export. Another Russian-flagged tanker reported a drone incident off Turkey’s coast, though Kyiv denied involvement.

Such attacks have disrupted operations at Russia’s key Black Sea port of Novorossiysk, hampering energy shipments—a vital revenue source for the Kremlin.

Trump Envoy in Moscow as Peace Talks Continue

Putin’s remarks coincided with the visit of U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff, who arrived in Moscow to discuss the draft peace proposal Washington has circulated. Trump’s administration has been pressing for a negotiated settlement before the conflict’s fourth anniversary.

Putin suggested European nations are deliberately obstructing U.S. diplomatic efforts to maintain influence over the conflict narrative.

A Renewed Warning to the West

With Europe warning that a Russian victory in Ukraine could embolden Moscow to strike a NATO country—and Putin dismissing such concerns as “nonsense”—tensions remain at their highest levels since the war began. Tuesday’s comments underline Russia’s readiness to escalate if it perceives Europe crossing a red line.

While neither side openly seeks direct confrontation, the widening distrust, drone warfare in the Black Sea, and competing peace initiatives highlight just how fragile the current moment has become.
