New Hardline Leader in Iran: Mojtaba Khamenei Vows War as US-Israel Strikes Intensify

The conflict between Iran and the United States-Israel alliance has entered a dangerous new phase as Tehran declared there is “no room for diplomacy” while intense military operations continue across the region.

The announcement comes amid dramatic political developments inside Iran, where Mojtaba Khamenei has reportedly assumed the position of Supreme Leader following the killing of his father, Ali Khamenei, in recent strikes linked to the escalating war. The younger Khamenei, widely viewed as more hardline and closely aligned with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), has already received pledges of loyalty from key military and political elites.

Tehran: War First, Talks Later

Iranian officials signaled a hardened stance on Monday, rejecting mediation attempts from several countries and insisting that any negotiations must wait until military aggression stops.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said the ongoing attacks were aimed at destabilizing Iran and seizing control of its energy resources.

“While military aggression continues, there is little room to talk about anything other than a decisive response,” Baghaei said.

Iran has accused Washington of attempting to weaken or even partition the country in order to control its vast oil reserves. Officials in Tehran argue that the Western strategy resembles earlier attempts to fracture regional states such as Syria.

At the same time, Iranian leaders insist that the country is prepared for a prolonged conflict. A senior Iranian official told Al Jazeera that Tehran has the capacity to continue the war for an extended period if necessary.

New Leader, Harder Line

The emergence of Mojtaba Khamenei as the new Supreme Leader represents a major turning point in Iranian politics. The 56-year-old cleric and veteran of the Iran‑Iraq War is considered to have strong backing from the IRGC, the powerful military force that plays a central role in Iran’s defense strategy.

Analysts believe the leadership transition could make compromise even more difficult. Mojtaba Khamenei is widely seen as more uncompromising than his father and has deep ties to the security establishment.

The IRGC itself commands approximately 190,000 active-duty troops and maintains influence over strategic missile units, drones, and regional proxy networks. In addition, Iran can mobilize hundreds of thousands of members of the Basij, a paramilitary militia tasked with internal security and mobilization during wartime.

Massive Air Campaign Continues

Meanwhile, US and Israeli forces have continued extensive bombing operations across Iran. Explosions were reported in cities including Tehran and Qom, just days after strikes on major oil facilities triggered toxic smoke and environmental hazards in the Iranian capital.

Iran has responded with ballistic missile and drone attacks targeting US military sites and allied infrastructure across the Gulf region. Several Gulf countries have reported strikes or attempted attacks, including Bahrain and Saudi Arabia.

In Bahrain, witnesses reported thick smoke rising near the Bapco oil refinery after what authorities said was an Iranian drone strike that injured dozens of people.

The conflict has also expanded into Lebanon, where Hezbollah forces claim to be fighting Israeli troops following helicopter landings near the Syrian border. Israeli airstrikes have also targeted Hezbollah-linked infrastructure in the southern suburbs of Beirut.

Oil Prices Surge as Global Markets React

The rapidly expanding conflict has already begun to shake global energy markets. Oil prices surged more than 25 percent at the start of the week, reaching their highest levels since mid-2022 amid fears that shipping lanes and regional oil production could be disrupted.

The G7 countries said they are closely monitoring the situation and are prepared to take emergency measures, including releasing oil from strategic reserves if necessary.

US President Donald Trump attempted to reassure markets, arguing that higher oil prices would only be temporary.

“Short-term oil prices… are a very small price to pay for eliminating the Iranian nuclear threat,” Trump said in a statement.

Disagreements Over War Strategy?

Despite the close alliance between Washington and Tel Aviv, reports suggest there may be emerging differences over war strategy.

According to US officials, some Israeli attacks on Iranian fuel infrastructure went further than Washington had expected, raising concerns about escalation and economic fallout.

Still, the United States continues to support Israel militarily, while discussions reportedly continue over potential next steps — including the possibility of deploying special forces to secure Iran’s near-weapons-grade uranium stockpiles.

Is There an Exit Ramp?

Diplomatic efforts are still underway behind the scenes. Mediators from Qatar, Oman, and Italy have reportedly attempted to facilitate talks between Iran and the United States.

However, Iranian officials say negotiations will only be considered if attacks stop and Tehran’s conditions are met.

With missile strikes continuing, oil prices climbing, and new leadership in Tehran adopting a hardline stance, analysts warn the conflict could escalate further before any diplomatic breakthrough becomes possible.

For now, the region remains on edge as the war threatens to expand into a wider Middle East confrontation with global economic consequences.
