The freedom convoy that turned into huge protests back in February 2022 and that forced the Trudeau government to use extraordinary powers and invoke the Emergencies Act for the first time, is now back to haunt the liberal government.

Questions and inquiries are now being raised in Canada to understand the need for the government to resort to such a drastic and draconian measure. Unsurprisingly, the government led by Trudeau has yet again failed to respond satisfactorily.

Background to the freedom convoy

The freedom convoy started as a small team of western Canadian truckers, family members and friends with a belief that “freedom” is constantly at war with those who want to limit it, and that it must be defended at all costs.

In mid-January, this small group decided to peacefully protest against the Trudeau regime’s stringent Wuhan virus policy, which was stifling their freedom. The policy restricted anyone from going to work, restaurants, gyms and even from traveling unless they were vaccinated. In protest, a huge convoy of trucks arrived in the national capital of Ottawa to demonstrate against the vaccine mandates and other Wuhan virus-driven restrictions. The protest soon snowballed into a huge movement that resonated with thousands more. Their objective was to compel every level of government in Canada to repeal restrictive vaccine mandates.

A brutal suppression

The convoy movement was by and large energetic and peaceful; however, Trudeau didn’t leave any stone unturned in his efforts towards declaring the trucker protests anti-national and a threat to Canada’s security. Feb 14 saw the implementation of the temporary emergency powers available under National Security Legislation. By Feb 20 all the protestors and vehicles that had assembled in the area had left. It was reported that some security personnel were carrying batons, pepper spray and guns. One can only imagine just how brutal the authorities must have been.

Arguments advanced by the aggrieved

Trudeau thought he could get away with brutally suppressing the Freedom Convoy. He fancied his status as an unrivaled human rights champion would remain intact. Alas! Trudeau isn’t living the life of his dreams, at least in this case. It seems that the day of reckoning for Trudeau has arrived.

It turns out that the rare invocation of emergency powers isn’t boding well for the liberal leader. Several civil liberties groups want to review the minutes of the meetings and other documents that would serve to reveal the reasons behind taking this drastic step. To make it worse for Trudeau, the Federal court is also involved. The argument before the Federal court is that the court would need information that is protected by the principle of cabinet confidentiality in order to determine whether the use of the Emergency powers violated the charter of rights and freedoms.

Meanwhile, a spokesperson working for the public inquiry investigating the issue has said that the inquiry is working with the government to procure those “secret” and “protected” government documents.

The proverbial hide and seek

Individuals, civil liberties groups and a public inquiry are demanding the release of this “protected, confidential” information. Trudeau’s government, on the other hand, has successfully evaded them till now. A government official labelled these efforts as a “classic fishing expedition”. A branch of civil service that supports the Prime Minister’s Office has promised to provide the requested information to a parliamentary committee that is currently studying the use of the emergencies act. However, the co-chair of that committee recently revealed that they haven’t received anything.

With each day passing, pressure is getting piled up on Trudeau. It’s Trudeau’s last-ditch effort to prevent the collapse of his already-precarious and politically vulnerable regime. The Freedom Convoy ghost is back to haunt Trudeau, and the numbed prime minister has already started shitting bricks.
