He was born on September 18, 1969, Kundapura, Udupi district, Karnataka, India.
With actor and director Kashinath, he began his career in movies as a writer and assistant director. Tharle Nan Maga was his debut film under his direction. Midway through the 1990s, Upendra directed Om and then A, the latter of which marked his acting debut. A Bollywood actress named Raveena Tandon starred in his subsequent movie, Upendra.
He returned to directing with the critically and commercially successful Kannada film Super after a decade of performing in Kannada and several Telugu films.
