New Zealand Local body elections: The quickly changing global dynamics have forced the world populace to come to terms with the realities of the world and have made them realize the need for an unapologetic administration that would look out for the interest of its people. As a result, many states like Italy and Sweden have recently brought in nationalist parties to head the governments and protect the populace from financial ruin owing to the war in Ukraine. Well, the Kiwis are no different. New Zealand is set to turn right and there isn’t a thing Jacinda Ardern could do about it.

New Zealand, in an expected turn of events in local government body elections, has opted for right-leaning candidates and have let go of left-leaning mayors in Auckland, Christchurch and Dunedin. You see, New Zealand has not fared quite well under the leadership of the Labor party headed by PM Jacinda Ardern. The governing Labor Party in 2020, led by incumbent Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, won the election in a landslide victory against the National Party and things have taken a worse turn since then.

New Zealand’s policy has become a knotty problem ever since Jacinda Ardern entered office. The rate of inflation in New Zealand was around 7.3% in September 2022, which is a 32-year high. People are looking to stretch their shopping budgets further as a result, with some resorting to extreme measures, like cutting food expenses. Yet, Jacinda remains fully unaware of the soaring inflation rates. Kiwis were also extremely tired of the constant covid-19 restrictions and lockdowns, which were a copy of China’s ‘Zero Covid Policy’. These restrictions were being imposed forcefully on people in the name of the pandemic.

The populace was indeed fed up and reports of protestors camping on parliament grounds made the headlines at the beginning of the year. Moreover, Jacinda’s love for China seems to have upset the Kiwis. She claims that the connection between China and New Zealand is one of the most crucial ones with China having a long history of interaction with its government, citizens, cultures, and business. According to Analysts, China seems to have cozied things with the Kiwis only to present a viable counter to the US and UK’s attempts to entice Beijing by signing the AUKUS deal with Australia.

The west through the AUKUS deal is planning to ready Australia to acquire nuclear submarines which could threaten China in the Indo pacific. So, Beijing decides to get Kiwis on its side by promising investments so that it could keep the Australians in check. The experts very well know that going in deep with the Chinese could threaten the sovereignty of New Zealand. As per Bloomberg, Ardern’s approval as prime minister dropped to 30% in June, which is the lowest since she became prime minister in 2017. This is a sure-shot indicator that would solidify the prospect of the end of Jacinda Ardern as PM of NZ.

For sure, the Kiwis would not sit by idle when the country is suffering financially and the PM is planning to sell off its sovereignty to foriegn powers. The populace has given a befitting reply to the PM and has indicated her ousting and the welcoming of the nationalists in the 2024 elections.
