Raghunath Temple, Jammu – Overview

Raghunath Temple is dedicated to Lord Rama, one of the most important Hindu deities. The temple was commissioned by Maharaja Gulab Singh, the founder of Jammu and Kashmir, and construction began in 1835. The temple was completed between the years 1853 and 1860.

The inner wall of the main temple is decorated with gold sheets on three sides. The Raghunath Temple has an elaborate gallery of “Lingams” and “Sailgrams” open to the general public. The Ram Navami festival of this temple is worth seeing.

History of this Temple

The Raghunath Temple was built between 1853 and 1860 by Maharaja Gulab Singh and his son Maharaja Ranbir Singh. Several deities are enshrined in the temple, but the presiding deity is Lord Rama, an avatar (avatar) of Lord Vishnu.

The Raghunath Temple is historically significant, and is surrounded by several temples dedicated to various gods and goddesses associated with the epic Ramayana. This famous temple in Jammu is known for its beautiful paintings depicting Ram Leela as well as Krishna Leela.

Five kalash can be seen outside this temple. There are huge idols of Lord Rama, Sita and Lakshmana. The Raghunath Temple also has idols of characters from the Ramayana and Mahabharata period. The Char Dhams can be seen together in this place.

Here you will see Rameshwaram Dham, Dwarkadhish Dham, Badrinath Dham and Kedarnath Dham. Lord Satyanarayana can be seen in one of the chambers of the temple.

Place to visit near Raghunath Temple

Bahu Fort

Bahu Fort is situated on a hill 4 km away from Jammu. This fort is 3000 years old, which was built by Raja Bahulochan. The amazing thing is that despite being so old, this fort is still safe and sound. This fort is situated on the banks of Tawi river. There is also a temple of Maa Kali inside the fort, where a large crowd of local people gathers on Tuesdays and Sundays.

Pahalgam

Pahalgam is the most popular tourist destination among tourists visiting Jammu, situated at an altitude of 2740 meters. This place is surrounded by beautiful lake, trees, flowers and meadows. Tourists like to spend time amidst the greenery and natural beauty here. Here tourists can enjoy rafting and golfing in the lake. There is Mamal Temple, Betal Valley which is the main attraction here.

Sanasar

This place is situated at a distance of 18 km from Patnitop tourist place of Jammu. The place is surrounded by hills on all sides where pine trees add to its beauty. There is also a pond here which adds to the beauty of the place. Tourists can also enjoy paragliding here.

Sudh Mahadev

Sudh Mahadev is a popular tourist spot situated at a height of 12 to 25 meters in Jammu, which is situated at a distance of about 120 km from Jammu. The panoramic view here attracts tourists. Here you can see the beautiful environment of lush green trees and plants, tourists experience a lot of peace. Many stories related to the life of Lord Shiva and Parvathi are associated with this place.

How to reach Raghunath Temple

By Road- Nearest Bus Stand from this temple is Jammu Bus Stand, Which is located at the distance of approx. 0.5 km from the temple.

By Train- Nearest Railway Station from this temple is Jammu Tawi Railway Station, which is located at a distance of about 3 km from the temple. From here you can easily reach this temple by using local transport.

By Air- Nearest airport from this temple is Jammu airport, which is located at the distance of about 8 km from the temple. From here you can easily reach this temple by using local services.
