Sankat Mochan Hanuman Mandir – Guide
Sankat Mochan Hanuman Mandir is a sacred Hindu religious centre dedicated to Lord Hanuman and located in the holy Indian city of Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh. This temple established by the great Hindu saint Shri Goswami Tulsidas ji is situated on the banks of the mythical Assi river. This sacred temple is also known as the Monkey Temple because of the presence of a large number of primates within the premises.
History of this temple
Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya, the great educationist and freedom fighter who is also the founder of the Banaras Hindu University, is credited with establishing the present Sankat Mochan Hanuman Mandir Varanasi structure in the early 1900s. The Sankat Mochan Temple was built with the idea of reviving the spirit of devotion and loyalty among the common people and strengthening the nation’s resolve.
In earlier days, the great saint Tulsidas is believed to have established the Sankat Mochan Hanuman Mandir Varanasi as a tribute to the monkey god. Tulsidas is credited with writing the script for the Hindu epic ‘Ramcharitmanas’, which is said to be one of the greatest narratives of the worldly experiences of Lord Rama. Hanuman is considered an exemplary example of a brahmachari, who vowed to spend his entire life in devotion to Lord Rama.
