UK backstabs the Caribbean!

The Queen is dead but the imperialist attitude of the United Kingdom is not

British Airways, a major player in the UK’s airline industry, has made the decision to scrap a popular ticket-buying option, community fares, to its Caribbean destinations. The said scheme has been in place for over 30 years. This scheme included Caribbean destinations, and its removal is expected to have devastating effects on travel from the UK to the islands.

This decision will make expensive flights unaffordable for many to destinations such as St. Lucia and Dominica, which is incredibly disheartening for those who rely on this travel for business, tourism, or to connect with loved ones.

Scrapping the Community Fare

The Community Fare System (CFS) was a program established by the Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO) in collaboration with participating member countries and airlines to provide reduced airfares to Caribbean nationals, particularly those who reside outside of the region, to facilitate travel within the Caribbean.

The Community fares scheme was a ticket-buying option offered by British Airways that allowed travelers to book a ticket and pay for it over a period of time. This scheme was particularly popular among certain communities, including those with roots in the Caribbean, who relied on it to make travel to their ancestral homes more affordable.

The Impact on the Economy

Tourism is a vital component of the Caribbean’s economy. The Caribbean has been a  popular tourist destination for travelers from the United Kingdom. The UK has historical and cultural ties to many Caribbean countries, which makes the region an attractive destination for British tourists. In 2022, Jamaica became the number one destination in the Caribbean for UK travelers.

The apparent reason for this decision is the less revenues. The aviation industry of the UK has suffered terribly after the onset of the pandemic. British Airways owner had suffered a massive $7bn loss at the start of 2021. Since then, the airlines have been reportedly in a loss.

As a result, British Airways decided to sacrifice the most vulnerable community i.e. the Caribbean. Sadly, the Queen is dead but the imperialist attitude of the United Kingdom is not!
