Teli Ka Mandir Gwalior – Guide

Teli Ka Mandir is an ancient Hindu temple located within the precincts of the Gwalior Fort in the north Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. The temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, the preserver and protector of the universe. He is revered here in his mount Garuda, which is represented by a colossal image in the temple. This image surrounds the gate and is a major attraction of the temple. It is also the oldest and the tallest structure within the fort complex, with a height of 100 feet.

History of this Temple

This magnificent Gwalior Teli Ka Mandir was built by the members of the Teli community and hence is known as the oilman’s temple. It was built during the reign of King Mihirbhoj of the Pratihara dynasty during the 8th or 9th century. After the capture of the Gwalior fort by the Rashtrakutas during the 8th century, Telang Brahmins were entrusted with the task of presiding over all religious ceremonies.

The British reportedly used the temple as a soda factory during the Revolt of 1857. Repairs were carried out between 1881 and 1883 by Major Keith, a British officer who was then posted in Gwalior.
