Sangameshwar Mandir Pattadakal – Guide

Sangameshwar Mandir Pattadakal is one of the oldest and most popular temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. This temple is a part of the group of ancient monuments located at Pattadakal, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Pattadakal also known by different names like Pattadakallu or Raktapura or Pattada Kisuvolal is situated on the banks of Malaprabha river in Bagalkot district of Karnataka. The Virupaksha Temple at Pattadakal is an architectural marvel. The group of monuments represents a harmonious combination of the architectural styles of northern and southern India.

History of this Temple

The Sangameshwar Mandir Pattadakal was built by the great Chalukya king Vijayaditya and according to the inscriptions found in the temple, it was constructed during 720 to 733 AD. Pattadakal is the site of ancient temples of Hindu, Jain and Buddhists dating back to 7th – 9th centuries, where Many majestic temples were built mainly during the Chalukya rule. From the time of Chalukya dynasty, it has spiritual, cultural and rich heritage value for more than 1400 years.

Pattadakal is famous for its Dravidian style temple, Nagara style temple and some composite architecture. Earlier Sangameshwar Temple was famous as Vijayeshwar Temple after the name of the king. The temple is situated towards the south of the Chandrasekhara temple and is facing in east direction.

Virupaksha Temple is one of the oldest temples in India and one of the favorite places to visit in Pattadakal, Karnataka. Excellent is the only word to describe this pristine beauty, this is the only functioning sanctum sanctorum of the entire temple complex dedicated to Lord Shiva.

Mallikarjuna

Mallikarjuna is another grand temple dedicated to Lord Shiva and has attractive architecture. Built by the second wife of the Chalukya emperor Vikramaditya, this Dravidian designed temple has 3 mukha mandapams in 3 sides.

Galganath temple

The Galganath temple, built in the early 8th century, has a large shikhara. Magnificently designed in the Nagara style, the temple with the Shiva Linga and many other carvings and sculptures is a treat to the eyes.

By Air- The nearest airport from Sangameshwar Mandir Pattadakal is Hubli airport which is at a distance of 144 km from this temple. From here you can easily reach this temple by using local transport services or taxi.

By Train- The nearest railway station from Sangameshwar Mandir Pattadakal is Badami railway station which is at a distance of 22 km from this temple. From here you can easily reach this temple by using local transport services or taxi.

By Road- Roads to this temple are well connected with the other cities of the country so you can easily reach this temple by using your own vehicle or by any public buses or taxi from any part of the country.
