Janaki Mandir Janakpur – Guide

Janaki Mandir is a Hindu temple in Janakpur in the Mithila region of Nepal, dedicated to the Hindu goddess Sita. The temple is an example of Hindu-Koiri Nepalese architecture. It is often regarded as the most important model of Koiri architecture in Nepal. Built entirely in dazzling white and in a mixed style of Mughal and Koiri domes, it is constructed over an area of ​​4,860 square feet.

History of this Temple

The Janaki Mandir Janakpur was completed in the year 1911. Spread over 4860 square feet, this temple was built by Queen Kumari Vrishbhanu of Tikamgarh. Earlier there used to be a forest where Shurkishor Das had come to perform penance. During his stay here, he found an idol of Mother Sita, which was made of gold. It was he who established it there.

Queen Kumari Vrishabhanu of Tikamgarh had gone there once. She had no children. During the worship there, she had asked for a vow that if she has a child in future, she will build a temple there. She returned there after having a child and the construction of the temple started in the year 1895 and the construction of the temple was completed in 16 years.

Janaki Mandir Janakpur opens at 6:00 AM in the morning and close at 8:00 PM in the evening. Morning aarti is performed at 6:30 AM in the morning and evening aarti is performed at 7:30 PM in the evening.

Naulakha Temple

There are many temples of Ram-Janaki in Janakpur. Among these, the grandest temple was built by Maharani Vrishabhanu Kumari Bundela of Tikamgarh, India. With the wish of having a son, Maharani Vrishabhanu Kumari Bundela got the ‘Kanak Bhawan Temple’ constructed in Ayodhya, but in Janakpuri in 1896 AD to get a son by the order of the Guru, when the son was not received. I got the Janaki temple constructed.

Vivah Mandap

In this mandap, on the day of Vivah Panchami, the marriage of Ram-Janaki is done according to the rituals. There is a place named ‘Uttar Dhanusha’ 14 km from Janakpuri. It is said that Ramchandra ji broke his bow at this place. The stone fragments are called relic.

Ratnasagar Kund

Ratnasagar which is situated at ‘Dhanukha’ about 9 km from Janaki temple. That’s where Shri Ram broke his bow. It is said that every 25-30 years a huge shape of the bow is formed there which is visible for 8-10 days.

By Road- Roads to this temple are well connected with the other cities of the country so you can easily reach this temple by using your own vehicle or by any public buses or taxi from few parts of the country.
