On March 16th, Ahmed Shehada, the president of Brazil-Palestine Institute was detained by Panama’s immigration service. He had his Brazilian passport seized while going to Columbia’s capital Bogotá to take part in a Palestinian diaspora conference in Latin America.

Shehada, the Palestinian leader who holds Brazilian citizenship, was held by local authorities for an excess of 24 hours. In his latest communication, he revealed that he is going to be deported and is awaiting a flight. Additionally, he said that Panamanian Intelligence had interrogated him. There are reports which say that even CIA and Mossad were involved in the affairs.

Sayid Tenorio, the vice-president of Ibraspal, contacted the former Palestine Front members, Ministers Alexandre Padilha and Paulo Pimenta. The Brazilian government had to intervene to assist Ahmed Shehada as he is a Brazilian citizen and had a valid Brazilian passport.

Furthermore, the Brazilian embassy in Panama was also mobilised.

Those close to Ahmed assert that he is not subject to any legal proceedings and has a spotless record, thus making the detention unjustified. Additionally, his health is of concern since he is suffering from cancer.

The family of Ahmed have lost many of their relatives in Palestine and he is barred from returning there. It is believed that the detainment is politically motivated and the reasons for it are still unknown.

The Unexpected Pawn

The detention of Ahmed Shehada by the immigration authorities of Panama has raised many questions about the reasons behind the incident. Though the Panamanian agents tried to steal his cell phone, they were unsuccessful and Shehada was deported to Brazil.

Though the allegations of the withholding are not yet known, the US could be using Ahmed Shehada as an unexpected pawn in its hands against Brazil. Pawn of what sort?

Well, last month, Brazil allowed the Iranian warships to land at the Rio de Janeiro Port. This happened despite the US asking Brazil to deny them the permission to dock, citing exclusive US restrictions against Tehran. However, Brazil couldn’t care less.

Ted Cruz, a senator from the United States, is enraged by Brazil’s disregard for Western interests. He has warned Brazil that the US’ anti-terrorism laws are “not open to interpretation” and has asked President Joe Biden to “enforce applicable sanctions” if Brazil does not comply with Washington’s demands.

Furthermore, Cruz has suggested that Congress should order the administration to sanction Brazil. Further, Brazil’s support for the Palestine issue is well documented.

Therefore, the move against Shehada has all shades of evil motives of the US. This move by the US is a clear indication that it wishes to paint Brazil as a new haven for terrorists.

The US has portrayed Shehada as a symbol of the alleged terrorism activities in Brazil and targeted him by detaining him in Panama. This would have sent a strong message to Brazil that it should not disregard the US in the region or will face penalties.

Shehada’s detention and the subsequent deportation to Brazil have served as a warning to the Brazilian government that it should not go against US foreign policy. The US has successfully used this incident to send a warning to Brazil and make it wary of its activities.

This incident has raised many questions about the US foreign policy and its role in trying to control the activities of other countries. The US has to be careful in using such tactics and must understand the implications of its actions.

Will the US succeed in making Brazil comply with its authoritarian rules or will Brazil ignore the warnings and continue to oppose the US?

Only time will tell.
