Well, Hungary sure knows how to pick its friends. In a bold move, the Orban government has declared its support for Bosnian separatist leader Milorad Dodik and his secessionist agenda. It seems like Hungary has taken the phrase “a friend in need is a friend indeed“ a bit too literally.
The Orban government has vowed to protect Dodik from any sort of western sanctions as long as they are in power. Dodik has been on the EU‘s watchlist for quite some time now, thanks to his calls for the secession of Serbs from Bosnia.
Hungary and Dodik share a common interest in strengthening ties with Russia, rather than with the EU. They both see the EU as a threat to their sovereignty and independence. Both Hungary and Dodik have recently taken steps to strengthen their ties with Russia, such as signing agreements for energy cooperation and military support. Additionally, both Hungary and Dodik are deeply Eurosceptic, and have shown hostility towards Brussels.

Hungary has opposed efforts from the EU to promote liberal values, while Dodik has been a vocal critic of the EU‘s recognition of Bosnia and Herzegovina as a sovereign state. The Orban government also has a history of supporting secessionist movements. It has backed the separatist cause in Ukraine and is now supporting Dodik‘s ambitions in Bosnia. This shows that Hungary is willing to go to great lengths to help its friends and allies.
