Another one bites the dust: Germany’s diplomatic blunder in Chad

Chad expels German ambassador

Chad expels German ambassador: Diplomacy can be a tricky thing, and even the smallest missteps can lead to serious consequences. Speaking of missteps, it seems like many European powers these days are making plenty of them, particularly in regard to their diplomatic ties with the African continent. It is well-known how anti-Western sentiments have spread like wildfire across the African continent, and countries like France and even the US have already faced the brunt of this.

Despite this, Germany has ended up making a similar mistake, this time in Chad, and the fruits of its actions are certainly not to its liking. To cut the story short, the Government of Chad has expelled German ambassador Jan-Christian Gordon Kricke for his “impolite attitude”.

According to a report, the government of Chad has announced the expulsion of German ambassador Jan-Christian Gordon Kricke, giving him 48 hours to leave the country. The Chadian Communications Ministry stated that the decision was motivated by the “impolite attitude and non-respect of diplomatic customs” exhibited by the ambassador.

On the other hand, the German Foreign Ministry argued that the reason for declaring its diplomat persona non grata was not clear and that Chad’s justification for the move was “completely incomprehensible.”

A source within the Chadian government allegedly claimed that Kricke was “interfering too much” in the country’s affairs and making divisive remarks. Additionally, Reuters quoted sources stating that Chad decided to expel the envoy because of his comments about the delay in the country’s transition to civilian rule following a coup two years ago.

Chad’s current leader, Mahamat Idriss Deby, assumed power following the death of his father, President Idriss Deby, in 2021 while campaigning against armed insurgents in the northern region of the country. Since then, the country has experienced political instability due to delays in the transition to civilian rule.
