No Zelensky, No Problem” India turns blind eye to Zelensky’s G20 plea

Zelensky writes letter to PM Modi: Recently, Ukraine has been actively pursuing closer ties with India. The country’s deputy foreign minister has already visited India, but Ukraine is seeking further cooperation. President Zelensky has even written a letter to Prime Minister Modi, requesting India’s support against Russia. Zelensky’s appeal was forceful, with him stating that being on Russia’s side is a sin.

Letter of Zelensky to Modi is undoubtedly a persuasive pitch, but that’s not all. He also requested that Ukraine be given a spot in the G20, but this was swiftly denied by India. According to the Indian newspaper Deccan Herald, Modi has not committed to bringing Zelensky to the G20 or visiting Kiev himself.

In recent years, Ukraine has been seeking to expand its international relationships, particularly with nations that have the potential to be valuable allies. India is a significant player in international relations, and Ukraine’s desire to court the country is understandable. As two nations with a shared history of colonization, Ukraine and India have a natural connection. However, India stands on entirely different ground when it comes to Russia. Russia and India share a long-standing relationship based on shared strategic, economic, and cultural interests. The two countries have cooperated in areas such as defense, space, and energy.

India has emerged as Russia’s largest energy exporter in 2022, and this is the reason why Western allies have become irked by India’s deepening ties with Russia. Ukraine has often been seen chiding India, calling it a supporter of criminals for keeping doors open for Russia’s oil. Despite recent attempts by Ukraine to woo India, the bond between Russia and India remains strong.

If Modi has indeed refused Zelensky’s request to participate in the G20, it could be a significant setback for Ukraine’s efforts to expand its international relationships. However, it remains to be seen whether Ukraine’s charm offensive will be sufficient to sway India, especially given the long-standing relationship between India and Russia. Only time will tell whether India will choose to support Ukraine in its ongoing conflict with Russia, or maintain its close ties with Russia.
