government-funded media CBC: Oh CBC! We’re missing your presence on Twitter. Not sure about Canadians who were generally irked by CBC’s lack of diversity in reporting but Trudeau certainly isn’t having a hard time going to sleep. Although CBC has never been a beloved media network, this time, Elon Musk has taken the organisation’s trolling to such a level that the network has to quit Twitter altogether.

Well, folks, it looks like we have a classic case of Twitter drama on our hands. CBC, or the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, is doing rounds in the digital space catching the attention of just about everyone. It is no secret that CBC, Canada’s public broadcaster, is in bed with the government. And now, CBC has been labelled as “government-funded media” on Twitter. But wait, there’s more! CBC and the Canadian government came out claiming that they’re only 69% government-funded. Nice.

And guess what. That’s not all. Now here enters Chad Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and the world’s most prominent Tony Stark cosplayer. He took one look at CBC “69% government-funded” claim and decided to give them a new tag: “69% government-funded media”. Genius. Isn’t he?

Now, how did CBC react to this great burn government-funded media, though? Did they respond with a clever retort? Did they dismiss it and go about their day as usual? No, my buddies, no, no. CBC chose to completely stop using Twitter. Yes, they did take their ball and go back home.

And we don’t really blame them. Being exposed in that way in front of all of your Twitter followers must be difficult. It indeed is the pinnacle of humiliation. But let’s be honest people, Government funds are used to support CBC. They are paid by the taxpayer to provide news and information to Canadians.

In any event, let’s all pause to admire Elon Musk’s Twitter account, which is pure comedic gold. We’ll miss you on the platform, CBC, but we’ll always have reruns of “Schitt’s Creek”.

CBC pauses activity on Twitter after platform labels it "government-funded media"

After being labelled “government-funded media” by Elon Musk’s social media network, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) said in a tweet that it is leaving the platform.

Following the departures of PBS and NPR due to the “government-funded” and “state-affiliated media” classifications, CBC is the most recent media outlet to leave Twitter.

“Our journalism is impartial and independent. To suggest otherwise is untrue. That is why we are pausing our activities on Twitter,” CBC wrote in its final tweet.

Well, well, well, we know precisely how impartial you have been throughout the course. Let’s bring you back to memory.

Consider how the CBC handled the SNC-Lavalin crisis as an illustration. Even though there was ample proof of political meddling, the CBC’s coverage of the scandal was frequently tepid and cautious. The CBC’s lack of investigative reporting left Canadians with the impression that the controversy was not properly covered by the broadcaster. The CBC and its government subsidies were only made more embarrassing by this lack of critical scrutiny.

Canadians have over time felt embarrassed and humiliated as a result of the CBC’s weak leadership and regular biased reporting.

Although first appreciated, the CBC’s presence on Twitter has only helped to make the outlet look even worse. The CBC has been charged with publishing inaccurate and biased information, frequently in an effort to advance a certain agenda. This is all it has done.

Twitter possibly grew weary of being vilified and blamed for something that was beyond its control. And let’s face it, civility and reasoned dialogue aren’t exactly hallmarks of Twitter.

It’s unfortunate that the CBC is leaving Twitter in any case. Their departure will be felt because they are a significant voice in the Canadian media environment. Yes! A significant pro-Trudeau voice. A significant biassed and propaganda-driven voice which which will now be missed.
