The Canadian prime minister, Justin Trudeau, has never been a massive admirer of the ‘independent’ media. When faced with difficult questions or settings, he either flees the scene or accuses the press of being racial and bigoted. Though the majority of Canadian media outlets, including CBC, CTV, and Global News, have been staunch supporters of Trudeau, thanks to federal funding.
Other Canadian media outlets, such as Globe and Mail and TNC, have frequently made barbs, leaving the liberal party in a difficult situation and enraged. It was anticipated that Trudeau would begin checking news organizations that have supported opponents of him and his party, and it appears that he is already doing so.
Let’s penalize journalists: the liberals
Trudeau has already put Bill C-11 and C-18 in place to increase surveillance on media portals. However, now he seems to be targeting the journalistic ethics of Canadian journalists as well. Speak Trudeau’s language or simply going behind bars seems to be the new policy.
According to media reports, a policy resolution to combat internet misinformation was unanimously approved by Liberal Party members this past weekend, raising concerns that it would give the government authority over Canadian media outlets.
The Liberals declared in the resolution to “explore options to hold online information services accountable for the veracity of material published on their platforms, and to limit publication only to material whose sources can be traced.” For many others, this resolution appears to be going too far. Michael Geist, a legal professor at the University of Ottawa, described it as “deeply troubling” and a “dangerous proposal.”

Death of Democracy!
The Canadian Civil Liberties Association warned it would “seriously chill the freedom of the press.”
This resolution is meant to target platforms like Twitter and Facebook and other websites that post misinformation. The resolution’s author also said some Canadian journalists “post information they have not verified.” This drew severe criticism from the people of Canada and other political parties. Conservative heritage critic Rachael Thomas called the Liberal policy a “form of censorship.”
As a result of the mounting backlash, Trudeau backtracked and announced that they won’t implement the policy. The Canadian PM told reporters it “is not a policy we would ever implement.” “We will never harm journalists’ capacity to do the professional, independent work that they do,” he said.
“Rigorous, challenging, independent journalism is essential.” This abrupt turnaround, though, appears to be something of a prank. Trudeau is retracting because he didn’t anticipate the criticism to be so harsh and widespread. His history does not support the notion that he favors “independent journalism.”
Trudeau’s moves appear to be an artful attempt to clip the wings of the media, liberal media included. He is watching every media outlet, whether they are liberal, conservative, or even ardent JT lovers. Be prepared to face punishment because he undoubtedly will.

But honestly, just look at the irony! The self-proclaimed guardian of free speech, whose nation is sitting pretty at number 15 in the Press Freedom rankings, is sweating in fear of the media. Apparently, he fancies himself as the ultimate arbiter of what qualifies as journalism and what does not.
But let’s not forget, it’s not the federal government’s job to play judge and jury, determining who makes the cut as a “good” or “bad” journalist and devising fresh regulations to weed out the “not-so-good” ones. It’s up to people and they know, who is more righteous.
