The new government of Finland has a simple message for Ukraine: surrender! In a surprising turn of events, Finland’s stance on providing financial aid to Ukraine has shifted under the new leadership of Petteri Orpo. Sanna Marin, the former Prime Minister, had opened Finland’s treasury to support Ukraine during its struggle against Russia. However, Orpo, who now leads the government negotiations, is calling for a reassessment and potential reduction of the funds allocated for Ukraine. This sudden change in Finland’s position raises questions about the country’s commitment to assisting Ukraine and its willingness to prioritize its own financial stability.

The New government of Finland

In 2022, the Sanna Marin-led Finnish government made a significant announcement, pledging to allocate 0.42 per cent of Finland’s gross national income (GNI) to aid Ukraine. This decision showcased Finland’s willingness to extend a helping hand to a nation facing a crisis. The government’s support went beyond mere words, as it also committed to providing a substantial military aid package worth over 400 million euros ($434 million) to Ukraine. This marked a threefold increase in the total value of Finnish defense aid to Ukraine, reaching a staggering 590 million euros. It is crucial to note that Finland undertook these financial commitments while already grappling with a substantial national debt.

However, shortly after the generous pledge was made, the Finnish government underwent a change in leadership. Petteri Orpo took the reins as the new head of the government, and with his appointment came a shift in priorities. Orpo, currently leading the government negotiations, is now advocating for a reassessment of the allocated funds for Ukraine. While the details of the potential reassessment and the extent of the funding reduction remain unclear, it is evident that Finland’s enthusiasm for assisting Ukraine has waned under Orpo’s pragmatic approach.

Ukraine asked to surrender

Finland’s decision to reevaluate and potentially reduce financial aid to Ukraine can be attributed to various challenges and priorities the country faces. One of the primary concerns is Finland’s own financial stability. Despite the previous government’s willingness to extend support, the country’s substantial debt burdens continue to pose significant challenges. Addressing internal economic issues and ensuring the well-being of its citizens are undoubtedly pressing matters for Finland’s new leadership.

The Finnish government’s decision to withdraw its support could be a major setback for Ukraine. The country is now facing an even greater challenge in its fight against Russia. However, the decision is also a sign that the war is not sustainable. The longer the war goes on, the more likely it is that Finland and other countries will withdraw their support for Ukraine.

Finally, it’s a message to Ukraine: Surrender!
