Trudeau’s latest dictum pushes Canadian Army on the brink of homelessness

Trudeau’s latest dictum pushes Canadian Army on the brink of homelessness

Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS), General Wayne Eyre, last year dropped a bombshell – well, a tacit one at least. As per him, It’s no longer a secret among the uninformed that the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) are straddling the edge of a rather uninviting cliff, precariously close to the abyss of operational insufficiency.

Let’s not mince words here; the military is in a state that’s about as comfortable as a snowball in July. The obvious shortcomings in core capabilities – you know, things like aircraft and ships, the essentials – are just the tip of the iceberg.

From funding woes that seem to have been lingering since the Cold War ended, to the not-so-wonderful fallout from the pandemic, the CAF is now facing a crisis that could make a lumberjack weep.

And then, enter the ringmaster of this mishap– Justin Trudeau. A leader whose approach to the military is akin to trying to catch fish with a fork. His emphasis on inclusivity has reportedly made recruiting a harder task than explaining the rules of hockey to a kangaroo.

But wait, it gets better. Brace yourselves, for the news that will surely make your Canadian hearts skip a beat – Trudeau wants to end basic amnesties for armed personnel.

Amnesties Ended For CAF

Picture this: 4500 members and their families are already on a waitlist for base housing. Imagine waiting in line for your home while your sworn duty is to protect the very nation that can’t seem to provide you with a roof over your head. And then suddenly receiving news, the current amnesties of CAF have been canceled.

The Canadian Armed Forces, it seems, are getting a dose of ‘thanks for your service, now please make do on your own.’

Trudeau’s government has decided to phase out an old housing benefit, claiming that the budget needs tightening, as if the military were just another red maple leaf on the balance sheet. This benefit was aimed at helping military members afford housing, but apparently, they are expected to make do with the proverbial igloo.

Oh, and let’s not forget the brilliant explanation behind this decision. The military’s brass insists that the old benefit is outdated and needs to be replaced with something less helpful. Because, you know, making life harder for those who serve is clearly a top-tier priority.

As if things weren’t bad enough, there’s also the issue of veteran homelessness. The lack of coordinated support for veteran housing is like trying to find your way out of a Canadian maze without a GPS – frustrating and directionless.

This dire situation has sparked a report by McGill University, highlighting the shocking reality that veterans are two to three times more likely to face homelessness.

The numbers are as bewildering as a beaver tap-dancing in a blizzard – ranging from 2,400 to over 10,000 homeless veterans. It’s a crisis that screams for attention, a cry that seems to have fallen on deaf ears.

The Canadian Armed Forces deserve better than to be treated like forgotten hockey pucks. It’s high time the maple leaf on their shoulders is matched with a warm roof over their heads. Trudeau’s government’s decisions are pushing these brave individuals closer to homelessness, and that’s a narrative that no amount of maple syrup can sweeten.
