Four islands, united by modernity are burdened by a scarcity of domestic energy resources. Sadly Geography and geology have forced Japan into a dependency on energy imports to fuel its high-octane lifestyle.
The Energy Problem of Samurai
Earlier Japan’s energy thirst was fulfilled by Russia and America. But the Ukrainian saga changed it all.
Japan’s self-imposed embargo on Russia, coupled with logistical knots, transformed the energy landscape into a more challenging puzzle.
But wait, there’s more. Japan’s problems don’t end there. The samurai nation is also scrambling to secure more supplies for rare earth metals—those unsung heroes of modern technology.
China, the custodian of rare earths, controls a lion’s share of the market. 60% of Japan’s rare earth demands were fulfilled by Japan till now. However, the tensions in the South China Sea have pushed Japan to seek new allies in this high-stakes treasure hunt.
Japan, realizing that Uncle Sam might be too busy to lend a hand for its demands, and so, it has turned its gaze toward the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).

A ‘Rare’ Gamble?
According to media reports, Japanese foreign minister Yoshimasa Hayashi is all set to meet GCC Foreign ministers.
With the assistance of GCC, Japan aims to shore up its energy security. Not only this, even Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and Iran’s President Ebrahim Raisi are all set to meet soon. The agenda? Iran’s nuclear program and a potential rare earth alliance.
Now, this is no hidden fact that Iran has vast rare earth mineral deposits. Alas, these treasures have been ensnared by a web of constraints—technological, economic, and geopolitical. Iran’s rare earth potential remained largely untapped, a sleeping dragon amidst the sand dunes.
It looks highly likely that Japan might try to enter a deal with Iran for exploration.
