Global Affairs Canada, the department responsible for international relations, issued the advisory on Tuesday. The department employed the abbreviation “2S” to encompass “two-spirit,” reflecting a range of Indigenous gender identities in Canada.

The advisory urges travelers to be aware of the legal landscape in various states and locales that might impact LGBTQ+2SL individuals. This development underscores the ongoing impact of legislative decisions on cross-border relations and social considerations.
The webpage also provides a connection to more comprehensive guidance on the exposure of LGBTQ individuals to local regulations in their travel destinations, “even if these laws infringe on your human rights.”
Canadian Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland, a previous foreign minister, shared with reporters on Tuesday that the travel counsel was revised due to Ottawa’s commitment to “the interests and the safety of every single Canadian.”
She emphasized that the government employs experts to diligently assess global conditions and identify potential risks to specific Canadian groups. Characterizing it as “the right thing to do,” she highlighted the priority placed on safeguarding citizens through such advisory updates.
