Justin Trudeau has a knack for stirring up global discontent through his statements and deeds, whether it involves baseless murder accusations against India or labeling Canadians as ‘Far-Right’ for opposing his gender policy.
His confrontational approach is unmistakable. Back in June, he directed criticism towards Poland regarding LGBTQ rights, triggering a strong reaction from Warsaw. Consequently, Warsaw seems poised to attack at a time when Trudeau is already facing considerable challenges.
After India, Poland has decided to ignite a diplomatic standoff with Canada, taking significant steps to address a contentious issue. Przemysław Czarnek, Poland’s Education Minister, announced efforts to initiate the extradition of Yaroslav Hunka, a 98-year-old Ukrainian Nazi veteran who received honors from Canadian parliamentarians recently.
“In light of the scandalous events in the Canadian Parliament, which involved the honor, in the presence of President Zelensky, of a member of the criminal Nazi SS Galician formation, Poland has initiated steps towards the potential extradition of this individual to Poland,” stated Minister Czarnek.
Poland’s ambassador to Canada, Witold Dzielski, clarified that this move is a preliminary action to determine Hunka’s responsibility for crimes committed in Poland, laying the groundwork for extradition. He further emphasized that the Canadian Parliament’s decision to honor Hunka constitutes a grave mistake and a serious transgression.
Warsaw’s Rebuttal: Diplomatic Discord with Ottawa
During Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s visit to Canada for the signing of the Canada-Ukraine Free Trade Agreement, the Canadian Parliament, under the leadership of Prime Minister Trudeau, chose to honor Yaroslav Hunka, a World War II veteran.
This act resulted in a standing ovation for Hunka in the House of Commons, where Speaker Anthony Rota hailed him as a “hero.” However, the celebration was short-lived as Hunka’s controversial past came to light.
Hunka had served in the 14th Waffen Grenadier Division of the SS, a unit established by the Nazis with Ukrainian volunteers during their occupation of the USSR. The Nuremberg Tribunal later classified the entire SS as a criminal organization due to their significant involvement in wartime atrocities.
Speaker Rota notably omitted any mention of Hunka’s Nazi affiliation, even though this information was publicly accessible. Trudeau faced considerable criticism for this decision, with many Canadians questioning his awareness and judgment in honoring a former Nazi member.
This incident worsened Justin Trudeau’s existing challenges, as he confronts domestic discontent over Chinese interference and a rising cost of living. On the international stage, Trudeau has further strained relations with India and now faces heightened tensions with nations that were once threatened by the Nazis.
