However, subsequent reviews and incidents, including the 2014 New Brunswick shooting, revealed ongoing deficiencies in the RCMP’s HBA inventory, impacting officers’ safety.
The current revelation that over 20% of RCMP’s hard body armour vests are expired further underscores the challenges within the organization.
In total, nearly 4,000 of the 18,595 units of hard body armour (HBA) used by RCMP officers across the country are past their 10-year recommended life cycle, the police force said in a document tabled in Parliament last month in response to questions by Conservative MP Kelly McCauley.

In its 2019 report, the auditor general also found the RCMP still didn’t have a national database to track its HBA inventory across Canada. Breton said the force expects to have such a tracking system for HBA set up after a new multi-year contract for such equipment is awarded “in early 2024.”
Kempa said it is “inexplicable” that, to this day, the force still doesn’t have a countrywide database to track all of its essential equipment.
