International Relations and war experts, scholars and thinkers have been talking of the return of a pre-world war scenario in Europe, and now, top it off, there are reports of a shocking move, as Germany has begun its first permanent deployment of troops on foreign soil since World War II.
According to the latest reports, the 45th Armored Brigade is being positioned in Lithuania, near Russian ally Belarus, as Berlin prepares for a potential conflict in the coming years. The media reports say a ceremony was held outside Vilnius this week, with Germany’s Brigadier General Christoph Huber assuming command of the newly established unit.
While speaking during the ceremony, the Brigadier General said, “We have a clear mission. We have to ensure the protection, freedom, and security of our Lithuanian allies here on NATO’s eastern flank.”
Military personnel arrived in Lithuania last year to prepare for the deployment. They have been formally integrated into the brigade. According to German Army plans, the unit will comprise approximately 5,000 military and civilian personnel, equipped with around 2,000 heavy weapons, and will be ready for combat by 2027.
Russia sees NATO as a hostile military organization and depicts its expansion near its border as a direct threat to Russian national security. NATO’s promise to admit Ukraine as a member, which shares a long border with Russia, is an escalated move. The expansion to Russia’s border is the main cause of Russia’s conflict with Ukraine. Europe and NATO should have taken cognizance of the Russian security concern, but Europe ignored it.
German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, a strong supporter of troop deployment in Lithuania, has claimed that Russia could launch an attack on NATO by 2029 or 2030 a claim Moscow categorically denies.
In the second year of the Russia-Ukraine war in 2023, Germany and Lithuania signed a troop stationing agreement in order to station the new German unit 42nd Brigade. According to the agreement, the two battalions will consist only of German soldiers, while the third will include personnel from other NATO countries. Portions of the brigade will be stationed at the Rudninkai training ground in southeastern Lithuania, only 20 kilometres (12 miles) from the Belarusian border, while additional units will be stationed near the village of Rukla between Vilnius and Kaunas.

If one observes closely, one can clearly see the aggressive intentions of the Europeans, who are bucking up defence spending and troops and readying their troops for a clash. While Russia is sitting at the negotiating table with the US on the current Russia-Ukraine war, looking to find a resolution, Europe seems to be ready to up the ante and take the confrontation to the next level.
Previously, Post-Nazi Germany restricted military deployments abroad to temporary assignments, such as contributing to NATO forces following the occupation of Afghanistan in 2001. Hence, now if Germany has decided to put its troops abroad, it would mean that they are preparing for something big. On one hand Trump is working hard to dial down the tensions, on the other side Europe is bent on a confrontation with Moscow. The result of these moves may be something even Europe and Germany seem to have not fully ascertained at the moment.
