Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs Acquitted of Sex Trafficking and Racketeering, Convicted on Prostitution Charges

After a tense and closely watched two-month federal trial, Sean “Diddy” Combs has been acquitted of the most serious charges of sex trafficking and racketeering, but convicted on two federal counts of transporting women for prostitution. The verdict was handed down in a Manhattan courtroom after 13 hours of jury deliberation.

The 55-year-old hip-hop icon, once celebrated for his cultural influence and extravagant lifestyle, now faces up to 20 years in federal prison following his conviction under the Mann Act, a law that prohibits transporting individuals across state lines for “immoral purposes.” His sentencing is scheduled for October 3, 2025, and he will remain in custody until then.

Acquitted of Racketeering, Sex Trafficking

Federal prosecutors alleged that Combs operated a criminal enterprise involving sex trafficking, violence, drug abuse, and coercion, citing harrowing testimonies from his former partner, R&B singer Casandra “Cassie” Ventura, and another woman identified as “Jane.” The government accused him of using threats, drugs, and blackmail to force women into humiliating sexual acts, often involving paid male escorts.

However, the jury rejected the racketeering and sex trafficking counts, dealing a significant blow to prosecutors. Legal experts say the case struggled under the complex standards of RICO law, which requires proof of an ongoing criminal enterprise with defined structure and continuity. “RICO is deliberately hard to prove,” said Mitchell Epner, a former assistant U.S. attorney. “The defense effectively exposed gaps in the government’s narrative.”

Convicted of Prostitution-Related Offenses

Despite the acquittals, Combs was convicted of two counts of transporting women for prostitution — one count each relating to Ventura and “Jane.” These lesser charges stem from allegations that he arranged for the women to travel for the purpose of engaging in paid sexual activities, with or without their full consent.

Defense attorney Marc Agnifilo hailed the mixed verdict as a “victory” and said the jury saw through “overzealous” prosecution tactics. “Mr. Combs has been given his life back by this jury,” he told reporters outside the courthouse. “They got the situation right — or certainly right enough.”

Emotional Reactions in Courtroom

Combs reacted visibly to the outcome — bowing his head in apparent prayer as the acquittals were read, then smiling at his family. Some of his supporters celebrated, while others reacted bizarrely, including dousing themselves in baby oil — a reference to trial testimony.

Still, any relief was tempered by Judge Arun Subramanian’s decision to deny bail, citing Combs’ alleged history of violence and witness intimidation. Prosecutors strongly opposed his release, warning he poses a flight risk and danger to others.

Cassie’s Impact and Civil Fallout

Though the jury did not convict Combs of trafficking Ventura, her legal team emphasized her role in holding him accountable. “Cassie paved the way for this verdict,” said attorney Douglas Wigdor, calling her testimony “a courageous act that left an indelible mark.”

Ventura had previously settled a $20 million civil lawsuit with Combs in 2023. She accused him of rape, prolonged abuse, and coercion during their decade-long relationship. Combs denied all allegations.

Beyond the criminal trial, the music mogul faces over 80 civil lawsuits related to sexual misconduct and abuse. These cases could result in further financial and reputational damage.

What’s Next?

With sentencing looming, Combs could receive up to 10 years per count, meaning a potential 20-year sentence. His legal team is expected to push for leniency, citing the dropped charges. However, prosecutors are likely to seek the maximum, arguing that the conviction reflects a pattern of exploitation.

Whether the verdict marks the end or only the beginning of Diddy’s legal reckoning remains to be seen. But for now, the once untouchable mogul finds himself behind bars — awaiting a future that no longer guarantees freedom.
