In a stark escalation of nuclear rhetoric, U.S. President Donald Trump declared on Friday that the United States is “totally prepared” for a nuclear conflict with Russia, following increasingly hostile exchanges with Moscow over the ongoing war in Ukraine and provocative statements from top Russian officials.
Speaking to reporters after ordering the redeployment of two U.S. nuclear submarines to what he called “appropriate regions,” Trump said his administration had taken all necessary measures to ensure the country’s readiness in the event of a full-scale nuclear confrontation.
“We are totally prepared,” Trump stated. “We don’t want it, we hope it doesn’t happen, but if it does, the United States will be ready, and we will protect our people and our allies.”
The president’s comments come on the heels of a heated back-and-forth with former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, now deputy chairman of the Russian Security Council, who recently issued what some analysts interpreted as a veiled nuclear threat involving Russia’s “Dead Hand” retaliatory strike system.
Submarine Maneuvers and Strategic Messaging
Earlier this week, Trump announced he had ordered the positioning of two U.S. nuclear submarines following what he called “highly provocative” remarks by Medvedev. While he did not specify the type or destination of the submarines—citing military protocol—the move was widely interpreted as a show of force aimed at deterring any further escalation by the Kremlin.
“A threat was made, and we didn’t think it was appropriate,” Trump told reporters. “We are acting out of caution, but also strength.”
The Pentagon has not publicly commented on the nature of the submarine redeployment, but defense analysts suggest it was likely intended as a visible deterrent rather than an operational prelude to conflict.
Russian Response: Defiance and Dismissal
In Moscow, Russian lawmakers and military officials dismissed Trump’s moves as symbolic and claimed that Russian nuclear submarines already maintain superior global coverage. Viktor Vodolatsky, a senior member of the Russian Duma, stated:
“The number of Russian nuclear submarines in the world’s oceans is significantly higher than the American ones… No reaction is needed. Our subs have had theirs in the crosshairs for a long time.”
Meanwhile, Russia has continued its preparations to deploy the Oreshnik hypersonic nuclear-capable missile to Belarus, further heightening NATO’s security concerns. The missile, first unveiled by Putin in late 2024, places significant parts of Europe within easy striking distance.
Trump’s Ultimatums and the August 8 Deadline
Trump has repeatedly issued deadlines for Russian President Vladimir Putin to halt the war in Ukraine, the latest being August 8. If Moscow fails to comply, Trump has threatened to impose sweeping sanctions targeting Russia’s oil exports and its trading partners, including India, China, and Turkey.
“This war should have ended long ago,” Trump said in a Truth Social post. “If Russia does not stop this madness, we will respond with economic power—and, if necessary, military strength.”
Despite these threats, there is little indication that Putin intends to back down. Russian forces have recently intensified strikes across Ukraine, and Kremlin officials continue to insist that Kyiv must meet Russia’s core demands—territorial concessions, a ban on NATO membership, and limitations on Ukrainian military power—before any peace talks can resume.
Warnings from Diplomats and Experts
While Trump’s statements have been welcomed by some hawks in Washington as a show of strength, foreign policy experts have warned that the increasingly inflammatory rhetoric from both Washington and Moscow risks spiraling out of control.
Fyodor Lukyanov, a prominent Russian analyst and editor of Russia in Global Affairs, downplayed Trump’s statements as “emotional and spontaneous,” but cautioned that the rhetoric could have real-world consequences if continued.
“Words like these, from both sides, can become self-fulfilling if cooler heads don’t prevail,” Lukyanov said.
Similarly, U.S. diplomats have emphasized the importance of avoiding direct confrontation. Secretary of State Marco Rubio reaffirmed earlier this week that a nuclear war “must never be fought and cannot be won.”
A Dangerous Standoff
As the clock ticks toward Trump’s August 8 deadline and with Russian missiles being deployed closer to NATO’s borders, the risk of miscalculation or accidental escalation is rising.
While both Moscow and Washington have stated publicly that they do not seek direct war, actions on both sides—military deployments, nuclear posturing, and economic threats—are pushing the two nuclear superpowers closer to the brink.
For now, the world watches anxiously as diplomatic options narrow, battlefield tensions escalate, and nuclear rhetoric enters dangerous new territory.
