In a significant escalation of the ongoing conflict, Israel is reportedly planning to launch a full-scale military occupation of the Gaza Strip, according to multiple Israeli media outlets citing top officials in Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office.

Prominent journalist Amit Segal of Channel 12 broke the story, quoting a senior source close to Netanyahu who confirmed: “The decision has been made… we are going to occupy the Gaza Strip.” This marks a major turning point in Israel’s nearly two-year-long war against Hamas and a potential shift in the Israeli government’s approach to the prolonged conflict.

Netanyahu Stands Firm: Israel Will Continue War in Gaza Until Hamas Is Defeated

Breakdown of Ceasefire Negotiations

The decision comes amid a complete collapse of ceasefire talks and growing frustration within the Israeli leadership over the failure to secure the release of the remaining 49 hostages still held by Hamas since the October 7, 2023, attack.

According to a report by Fox News, a Netanyahu aide warned, “Hamas will not release hostages without total surrender. If we do not operate now, the hostages will die of starvation, and Gaza will remain under Hamas’ control.”

Cabinet Meeting to Finalize Strategy

The Israeli Security Cabinet is scheduled to meet on Tuesday to finalize the next steps. Reports suggest Netanyahu has privately used the term “occupation of the Strip” during closed-door discussions, a dramatic shift from previous government policy, which had resisted reentering Gaza’s densely populated urban areas.

At present, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) reportedly control about 75% of Gaza. The new strategy could involve penetrating remaining zones, including areas where hostages are likely being held, raising alarm over the potential for high civilian casualties and further endangering captives.

Internal Divisions in Israeli Leadership

This reported strategic shift has exposed internal tensions. IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir is said to oppose the occupation plan, prompting backlash from Netanyahu’s allies. According to The Times of Israel, a senior official close to the prime minister stated, “If the Chief of Staff doesn’t agree, he should resign.”

These comments underscore deep divisions within the Israeli political and military establishments, especially given the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza and the immense risks involved in a full-scale invasion.

Hostage Videos Spark National Outrage

In recent days, Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad released distressing videos of two hostages—Evyatar David and Rom Braslavski—showing the young men emaciated, visibly traumatized, and pleading for rescue.

David is seen digging what he calls his “own grave” in a cramped tunnel, while Braslavski, barely able to speak, lies crying on the ground, saying he has no food or water. Their families approved the public release of the videos, hoping to raise awareness of the hostages’ conditions.

“These images are horrifying,” said David’s brother, Ilay. “Evyatar was healthy before his abduction. Now he’s a skeleton, buried alive.”

International condemnation swiftly followed, with leaders from France, Germany, the UK, and the US expressing deep outrage. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz called the images “appalling,” while French President Emmanuel Macron urged renewed diplomatic efforts and humanitarian access.

Humanitarian Crisis Worsens in Gaza

The hostage crisis is unfolding against the backdrop of a deepening humanitarian emergency. The UN-backed food security agency warned that a “worst-case scenario of famine” is already taking place. At least 175 people, including 93 children, have died from malnutrition, according to the Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza.

Israeli authorities continue to deny responsibility for the crisis, blaming Hamas for the deteriorating conditions. Meanwhile, international aid agencies claim that Israeli restrictions on humanitarian deliveries have contributed significantly to the famine-like situation.

Reports on Sunday claimed at least 27 Palestinians were killed as they approached food distribution points, allegedly coming under fire from Israeli troops.

Mounting Pressure on Netanyahu

The disturbing hostage footage and reports of starvation have placed immense pressure on Netanyahu’s government, both domestically and internationally. Critics accuse the Prime Minister of prolonging the war to maintain his fragile coalition, which includes far-right figures like National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir.

Ben Gvir has openly called for full military conquest of Gaza, elimination of Hamas, and even “voluntary emigration” of Palestinians. While once dismissed as extreme, such views now appear increasingly influential within Netanyahu’s decision-making circle.

International Reactions and UN Action

The Israeli Foreign Ministry has announced that it will address the UN Security Council in an extraordinary session to discuss the plight of hostages and Gaza’s humanitarian emergency.

Meanwhile, the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has demanded immediate access to the hostages to provide medical care and support. The ICRC said it was “appalled” by the videos and reiterated its call to both sides to allow humanitarian aid and inspections.

Hamas, through its armed wing Al-Qassam Brigades, stated that it would allow aid for hostages if Israel ceased airstrikes and opens humanitarian corridors.

A Crucial Juncture

As the Israeli Cabinet prepares to decide on a possible full occupation, the world watches anxiously. The decision could fundamentally reshape not only Gaza’s future but also the trajectory of the Middle East conflict.

With nearly two million civilians trapped in Gaza, and dozens of hostages still in captivity, the stakes are higher than ever.
