Trump to move U.S. Troops from Germany to Poland amid rift over NATO not supporting Iran war

US President Donald Trump has signaled that Washington could relocate American troops from Germany to Poland, escalating tensions within NATO as disagreements deepen over the ongoing Iran war. The remarks come amid reports that the Pentagon is preparing to withdraw approximately 5,000 US soldiers from Germany over the next year, raising fresh questions about the future of America’s military footprint in Europe.

Trump’s latest comments underscore growing frustration within his administration toward several NATO allies that have refused to fully support the US-led military campaign against Iran. Speaking to reporters on Friday, Trump suggested that Poland could become a major beneficiary of any troop redeployments from Germany.

“Well, Poland would like that,” Trump said when asked about the possibility of moving forces eastward. “We have a great relationship with Poland. I have a great relationship with the president. I like him a lot, so that’s possible.”

The statement marks another dramatic chapter in Trump’s increasingly confrontational relationship with European allies, many of whom have openly criticized Washington’s strategy in the Middle East.

Pentagon Plans Major Reduction in Germany

The proposed troop movement follows Trump’s earlier announcement that the US would begin reducing its military presence in Germany, where roughly 36,000 active-duty American troops are currently stationed. The president warned that the initial reduction of 5,000 troops could be only the beginning.

“We’ll be cutting a lot further than 5,000,” Trump recently stated, hinting at broader changes to America’s military posture in Europe.

The dispute intensified after German Chancellor Friedrich Merz sharply criticized Washington’s handling of the Iran conflict. Merz argued that the United States “obviously has no strategy” in the war and claimed that Washington was “being humiliated by the Iranian leadership.”

Those remarks reportedly angered Trump, who has increasingly linked America’s military commitments abroad to political loyalty from allied governments.

Poland Pushes for Larger US Military Presence

Poland has quickly emerged as one of the strongest supporters of expanding the US military presence in Eastern Europe. Polish President Karol Nawrocki publicly stated this week that Warsaw would welcome any troops withdrawn from Germany and that he personally intends to lobby Trump for redeployments to Polish territory.

For years, Poland has advocated for a stronger American military footprint near NATO’s eastern flank, citing security concerns related to Russia and instability in Eastern Europe.

However, not all Polish leaders support aggressively pursuing American troop transfers. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk warned against exploiting divisions inside NATO, cautioning that Warsaw should not “poach” troops from allied nations.

The differing responses inside Poland reflect broader concerns across Europe that Trump’s military reshuffling could deepen fractures within the alliance at a critical geopolitical moment.

Spain and Italy Also Face Trump’s Criticism

Germany is not the only NATO member under pressure. Trump has also threatened to reduce US troop deployments in Italy and Spain, accusing both countries of failing to adequately support Washington during the Iran conflict.

Speaking last week, Trump claimed Italy had “not been of any help” while describing Spain’s stance as “absolutely horrible.”

Spain has taken one of the strongest anti-war positions within NATO during the crisis. The government of Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez reportedly denied the use of a naval base near Cadiz for strikes against Iran and closed Spanish airspace to US military aircraft connected to the campaign.

Spanish officials have repeatedly condemned the war as “illegal” and “unjust,” placing Madrid at odds with Washington’s aggressive military approach.

Italy has similarly restricted US operations. Rome reportedly denied the use of an air base in Sicily without prior authorization, signaling reluctance to become directly involved in the expanding conflict.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni also criticized the war’s broader consequences, arguing that the fighting has worsened instability in the Middle East and increased global energy prices. Meloni further condemned Trump’s criticism of Pope Leo XIV, who had opposed the military campaign against Iran.

NATO Unity Under Growing Strain

The troop withdrawal threats highlight mounting tensions between Washington and several European allies over defense commitments, military strategy, and burden-sharing.

Trump has repeatedly accused NATO members of failing to support US-led operations while relying heavily on American military protection. In recent speeches, he described NATO as a “paper tiger,” arguing that many member states are unwilling to back Washington during major international confrontations.

The president has also criticized allies over military spending and their reluctance to participate in both the Iran conflict and ongoing efforts related to Ukraine.

Analysts warn that any significant reduction of US forces in Germany could reshape NATO’s military balance in Europe. Germany has long served as a central logistics and command hub for American operations across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.

Moving troops eastward into Poland would signal a major strategic shift, potentially increasing military pressure near Russia’s borders while simultaneously reducing America’s traditional military footprint in Western Europe.

As the Iran war continues to divide NATO members, Trump’s troop redeployment threats are intensifying fears that political disagreements inside the alliance could evolve into a deeper strategic crisis.
