Direct vs Regular, App vs Distributor: Where You Buy Equity Funds Can Change Your Returns by Lakhs

Two people buy the same mutual fund on the same day, yet ten years later, one has meaningfully more money than the other. Nothing about the fund changed. What changed was how they bought it.

Investing Through a Distributor Comes at a Quiet Cost

Most people who walk into a bank branch or call an advisor end up in what is called a regular plan. It looks identical to any other scheme, same portfolio, same fund manager, same stocks. But tucked inside is a small annual commission, usually between one and one and a half percent, paid to whoever sold it. That fee never shows up as a separate charge on any statement. It simply gets deducted from the fund’s returns before they reach the investor, year after year, quietly.

Small Percentages, Surprisingly Large Outcomes

A one percent gap sounds trivial until it sits inside a long term investment. Run the numbers on a twenty year SIP and that single percentage point can separate a portfolio worth ninety lakhs from one worth well over a crore. This is not a hypothetical exaggeration; it is basic compounding math. The commission an investor pays a distributor is really the return they are giving up, and it grows larger the longer money stays invested in equity funds.

Buying Direct Cuts the Middleman Out of the Math

Direct plans skip that commission entirely, which means every rupee of expense ratio saved gets reinvested and compounds alongside the original capital. This used to require paperwork and a fair bit of patience. Today, a stock market app like HDFC Sky changes that completely. Someone can compare hundreds of schemes, check expense ratios side by side, and start an SIP in a direct plan within minutes, all from a phone. Fund selection, portfolio tracking and redemption sit inside the same screen, with no branch visit required.

Where a Human Advisor Still Earns Their Fee

That said, distributors are not entirely without value. Someone new to investing, unsure about risk appetite or overwhelmed by fund categories, may genuinely benefit from guidance, at least initially. A good advisor can help avoid panic selling during a market crash, which is its own kind of return protection. The trade off is paying for that guidance indefinitely, even once the investor no longer needs hand holding.

A Practical Way to Decide

Investors comfortable doing their own research, reading a scheme’s fact sheet, and staying invested through volatility rarely need to pay for a middleman. A capable stock market app, HDFC Sky, now offers filters for expense ratio, past returns and fund size, essentially replicating what a distributor would recommend anyway, minus the recurring fee. Those who prefer a second opinion during turbulent markets might still value that relationship, provided they know exactly what it costs them.

The Bigger Picture Investors Often Miss

Choosing between direct and regular is not really about picking a better scheme. It is about deciding who gets a slice of the compounding. Equity funds already carry market risk that no one can eliminate. Handing away a percentage point every year on top of that, without a clear reason, adds a cost that has nothing to do with markets and everything to do with distribution. Before the next SIP gets set up, it is worth checking which plan type it actually sits in.
