Joe Biden snubs Japan’s concerns and defends North Korea’s missile activity

Joe Biden and his administration’s priorities are all over the place. Once again he has proven why the allies around the world should not rely on the USA for support. For a leader, a combination of confused and indecisive is the worst possible combination and Biden is a rarity to possess both. At a time when North Korea has fired ballistic missiles for the second time within a week, Joe Biden has been playing down these developments. He has in a way snubbed the concerns of the US ally Japan and even South Korea in the region.

North Korea launched two suspected ballistic missiles into the sea near Japan on Thursday, underscoring the country’s weapons advancements, fueling tension ahead of the Tokyo Olympics and ramping up tensions in the region. Pyongyang is banned from testing ballistic missiles, considered threatening weapons, under UN Security Council resolutions.

Although Joe Biden is yet to comment on the latest development, on Tuesday, he played down a non-ballistic missile launch that took place over the weekend, saying the US did not consider it a provocation. When asked if he considered the test a provocation, Biden said, “No, according to the Defence Department, it’s business as usual. There’s no new wrinkle in what they did.”

He even went to the extremes of defending and justifying the North Korean missile launch. When asked he said that these short-range missiles were thought to be either artillery or cruise missiles, which are not banned under the UN Security Council resolutions on North Korea.

After the launch of ballistic missiles by North Korea in the Sea of Japan, both Japan and South Korea have condemned the test, but there has still not been any statement by Joe Biden. The Biden administration’s North Korea policy is through and through a failure and the comment made by Joe Biden is the latest addition to the list. Even before the US President, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, while in Seoul, stated, “Beijing has an interest, a clear self-interest in helping to pursue the denuclearization of (North Korea) because it is a source of instability. It is a source of danger and obviously a threat to us and our partners.”

If one reads between the lines, the statement overtly says that the Biden administration does not have any policy to handle North Korea and expects the USA’s biggest adversary China to deal with North Korea.

At a time when Japan has been continuously raising its concerns regarding the imminent threat from North Korea, Joe Biden and his courtiers have been playing down these concerns. They have abandoned the policy of previous President Donald Trump, and have no policy of their own. It seems by serving North Korea in a platter to China, the Biden administration has abandoned its regional allies. And now by defending the actions of Pyongyang, Joe Biden is further proving his ineptness.
