Alexander Penelas is a former mayor of Miami-Dade County, Florida, and an American attorney. He was born on December 18, 1961, in Miami, Florida, U.S and currently living in the same place. Alex Penelas declared his re-election candidacy for Mayor of Miami-Dade County in April 2019, a job he previously held for eight years. In the first round, Penelas finished third behind Daniella Levine Cava and Esteban Bovo, despite leading most polls.
Political career
Alex Penelas campaigned for Mayor of Dade County in 1996, which was later renamed Miami-Dade County in 1997. Penelas defeated fellow Commissioner Arthur Teele in the Mayoral runoff.
Penelas received 37% of the vote against Teele’s 25%, with former Miami Mayor Maurice Ferre and Xavier Suarez coming in third and fourth, respectively. Penelas easily defeated Teele in the run-off, with 60.56 percent to Teele’s 39.44 percent.
In 2000, Penelas stood for reelection and won 51.6 percent of the vote against Miami Dade Commissioner Miguel Diaz de la Portilla’s 20.9 percent. There was no need for a runoff because Penelas exceeded the 50% mark.
In 2000, he spoke out against Elián González’s repatriation as mayor, but he was unable in halting the repatriation.
Penelas’ term as mayor was up in 2004, and he ran for the United States Senate in Florida. Longtime incumbent and Dade County native Bob Graham vacated the position, making it the first available Senate seat since 1980.
In the primary, Penelas came in third behind Betty Castor and Peter Deutsch. His campaign was hampered by Al Gore’s description of him as “the single most deceitful and dishonest individual I dealt with everywhere in America during the 2000 presidential election campaign.”
