22 Sappho Quotes

May I compose words that are as naked as flesh, as strong as bone, as resilient as sinew, and as sensitive as nerve?

When I gaze at you for a minute, I can no longer talk, but my tongue goes mute, and a delicate flame runs beneath my skin, and my eyes see nothing, and my ears hum and a moist sweat bathes me, and shaking grips me all over. – Sappho quotes

Beauty only lasts as long as it can be seen; goodness, which is beautiful today, will continue to be so tomorrow.

Weeping will be shed for what cannot be expressed.

It is great to adore what one loves the most.

Someone, I assure you, will remember us in the future.

Soon, the stars will hide their brilliance / beside the lovely moon, / when her full silver light / will illuminate the entire earth. – Sappho quotes

The words I command are immortal, even if they are simply breath.

Love is a master weaver of myths and fantasies.

If it comes with a bee, no honey for me.

Love, that looser of limbs, bittersweet beast against whose nothing can be done, drags me forward once more.

Captions by great poet Sappho

I prayed the entire time that our night would last twice as long.

Face me, my darling, and let the elegance in your eyes scatter.

Love is the most valuable of all the earth’s and heaven’s offspring. – Sappho quotes

The Earth, adorned with countless blooms, is now putting on her spring embroidery.

My limbs loosen and I shiver as I feel love, bittersweet and irrepressible.

The moon and the Pleiades have set; it is midnight, the time has passed, and I am alone.

Know more about Sappo: Sappho presented lyrical poetry, which was composed to be sung with a lyre accompaniment. Except for a few extracts and two works: “Ode to Aphrodite” and the Tithonus poem, much of her work has been lost over the years. This is most likely because “Saint Gregory of Nazianzus and Pope Gregory VII had her works destroyed,” according to the Poetry Foundation.

People referred to her as “Tenth Muse” and “The Poetess” because her poetry was so compelling. Sappho was a prolific poet, with an estimated 10,000 lines of poetry. Her poetry was well-received, and she was included in the canon of the Nine Lyric Poets, a group of poets who were highly regarded by Hellenistic Alexandria scholars.
