History of this Temple

About two centuries ago the bird-hunting tribesmen – ‘Boyas’ and ‘Yelikas’ lived in the forest area around the hill. They stood up and opposed the oppressive and autocratic rule of the Nawabs. They retaliated against the Muslim soldiers and chased them away. The then Golconda Nawab sent additional troops to crush the rebellion.

The Boya tribals could not face the onslaught of the Muslim army and went into the forest and bent down near the hill and prayed to the Almighty to save them. The spirit of Goddess ‘Shakti’ descended from the hill and protected the tribals and crushed the Nawab’s army.

The local people say that ‘Shakti’ has tied the heads of the soldiers with the branches of the banyan tree. Goddess Gangamma is the incarnation of ‘Shakti’. The local people believe that the water of ‘Pushkarini’ is very powerful and sprinkling it in the field brings good harvest.

Devotees can test whether their wish will be fulfilled by placing a flower on the deity’s head. The local people believe that if the flower falls on the right side, then it is positive and if it falls on the left side then it is negative. Many devotees who worshiped the Goddess were blessed with children.
