Azhimala Shiva Temple- Overview
The Azhimala Shiva Temple near Vishinjam in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, though dating back to the 16th century, has been attracting hordes of visitors in recent times. What is drawing the crowds is the huge and imposing idol of Lord Shiva standing atop a rock against the backdrop of the crashing waves of the Arabian Sea.

History of this Temple
The Azhimala Shiva temple predates the Shiva idol itself. This place has a mythological connection. It is believed that this was the place where the Pandavas spent some time during their exile. According to local people or historians, once when Draupadi felt thirsty, there was only salty sea water around. Bhimsen immediately made a hollow in a rock with his elbow, and a spring of sweet water gushed out, helping Draupadi to quench her thirst.
Azhimala Shiva Temple is so named because it is situated between the sea and huge rocks. It is believed that its original name was Azhimala Pulinkudi Sri Mahadeva Temple. The area was known as Pulinakudi in ancient times due to the presence of tigers in the vicinity.

The temple, dedicated to Lord Padmanabha, houses over twenty-six thousand sculptures and paintings. Illustrations of stories from the Puranas, Upanishads and other Hindu scriptures. There are also many deities of Vaishnavism in the temple. The Thiruvanchikulam temple tank was earlier known as Sri Padmanabha Tirtha.

By Road- Azhimala Shiva Temple is situated on Poovar to Vizhinjam road which is well connected through road network. And you can easily reach this temple by using your own vehicle or public buses or taxi.
